The Columbia County Fair Association will host the 2010 Kick Off and Dessert Banquet, Sunday February 28, 2010, to be held at the Seneca Community Room.

This past week a boxcar that was on the tracks near Seneca broke loose from the brake set and slowly roll down the tracks from Fourth Street to just past First Street before being stopped.

February 1, 1995

Dee Bowers of Dayton was sworn in as the new Postmaster in Starbuck. Bowers takes the place of Loretta Bath who retired after many years of service to the small community.

Fifty Years Ago

February 5, 1970

Mrs. Ida Mae Scott honored with Eagle Builder Award. Mrs. Ida Mae Scott, long-time 4-H Club youth leader in Dayton, became the first woman to receive the Hometown Builder Award from Blue Mountain Aerie No. 2618, FOE, as she was presented a certificate and a plaque.

Miss Sherri Grubb and Darin Munden, students of Dayton High School music department, have been notified they have been accepted as members of the 1970 All-State Choir and All-State Band, according to word from Music Director Glen Mitchell.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

February 1, 1945

News from Service Men and Women -- Army Nurse Marjorie Hawks writes her folks from Burma that her name at last has been posted to return home on the rotation plan. Alvin Richter and Bob Johnson Jr., who are attending a navy school at Farragut, Id., were home for the week-end.


John McCaw, who is an army airplane mechanic, is now located in the Philippines. Virginia Jones Gilmore, who lately joined the Waves, has been transferred to Stillwater, Ok., where she will receive more training.

Mr. and Mrs. Ward Rinehart were notified Wednesday that their son, Pfc. Dudley Rinehart, has been wounded in action in Belgium.

One Hundred Years Ago

February 4, 1920

Owing to the rapid spread of influenza last week, measures were taken on Saturday by the Board of Health and the County Commissioners to place a strict quarantine on Dayton in an effort to stamp out the epidemic.

The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Divine passed away Wednesday night from influenza which followed a severe case of whooping cough.

Ira Townsend, son of George Townsend of this city, died Tuesday afternoon from pneumonia following influenza.

Notice to High School Pupils: Members of the senior class are asked to come individually to the front steps of the Central School to receive assignments for home study. Other high school pupils will, at the same time, find assignments of such lessons to be studied at home, posted on the back doors.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

February 2, 1895

Mrs. Jane Silcott, wife of J.M. Silcott who has for years run the ferry at the foot of 4th street and a highly respected citizen of this place, met with a horrible death on the night of Thursday Jan. 24, by burning to death in her own bedroom.
