Bluegrass organizer John Hockersmith and Mariah Barthlow were on stage early for sound check on Sunday.

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association officially unveiled its 2010 Winter Olympic roster Sunday, January 31, naming former Bluewood skier Will Brandenburg to join the 12-man alpine team.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

February 8, 1995

State Grange presented the Dayton Elementary School third grade classroom a room-size hearing aid. The unit is a sound system to be used to enhance the teacher’s direction and messages to students. Barbara Gibson, Master of the Dayton Patit Valley Grange and serves as South East District Director for the Deaf Program, saw them used in Ellensburg and was so impressed with them she contacted the State Grange to acquire one for Dayton.

February, 1970

Janet Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smith, won the American Legion 12th District Oratory Contest at held at Richland, Wash. She is now eligible to compete in the 4th area contest to be held before February 24. A win in the area event would put her in the state oratory event.

Airman Richard D. Martin, son of Ilah Martin and Dorsey M. Martin, has completed basic training at Lackland Air Force base near San Antonio, Texas.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

February, 1945

During the month of January, the faculty and students of the Dayton Public Schools made the following bond and stamp purchases: High school students $1,089.80; Elementary school students $467.30; Faculty purchases $300.00.

W. J. Bowman has collected and taken to McCaw hospital several truckloads of wood for work in the rehabilitation department this season. Directors of rehabilitation in our veterans’ hospitals, thanked Bowman and the public for the wood, saying that the use of it has been of the greatest benefit to young men suffering from shock or recovering from serious wounds.

Mr. and Mrs. Virgil E. Literal received word from the war department that their son, Merrill D. Literal, had died December 20 of wounds received in combat in the Philippines invasion. Merrill attended school in Waitsburg and graduated from Dayton High School and is survived by his parents and two brothers, Arden and Harley.

One Hundred Years Ago

February 11, 1920

Star Farm Bureau will meet Saturday, Feb. 3 at 7 o’clock. Potluck dinner followed by business meeting, then games, cards, Chinese checkers, etc. Committee: Mr. and Mrs. Jack Munden, Mr. and Mrs. W. Basley, Mr. and Mrs. J. Welch, and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hilgert.

The W. R. C. met with Luella Gwinn Jan. 24 with a covered luncheon. A silver collection of $9.00 was taken for telephone calls for the boys at McCaw hospital.

The voters of this district have decided very emphatically that they will not pay the Dayton teachers a bonus of $200 each. The vote stood 98 for the bonus and 208 against it.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

Marshal McCauley says he will ring curfew from this date until the first of April at 8 o’clock when boys under the age of 16 must be at home or there will be trouble.

Geo. Swegle comes in with twenty acres for the beet industry and a number of others have agreed to plant ten acres. That’s the way to talk.
