Thirty speeder car crews enjoyed a damp lunch break in Dayton. These motorcars date back to the 1940s and were used by the railroads to transport work crews and when a large engine was not necessary.

Mariah Barthlow opened the Bluegrass jam at the Fairgrounds Pavilion for the Red Cross Fund Raiser. The Touchet Valley Arts Council group catered the finger foods for the Chamber.

Ninety-three fourth through eighth graders from 11 small neighboring schools convened at Dayton for last Wednesday’s Bi-State Written Spelling Contest and was sponsored by the Dayton School District’s EXPRO (the gifted children’s program). First place winners were Philip McKean 4th grade, Jon Thron 6th grade, Mason Mendel 7th grade, Amanda McKinley 8th grade; 2nd place winners Cassie Malecha 4th grade, Crystal Bruce 6th grade, Anne Luce 7th grade; 3rd place winners Laura Johnson 4th grade, Kayla Himmelberger 6th grade, and Jeremy Thorn.

Ranger Bob Tunell Retires after 28 Years of Service. Bob Tunell came to Camp Wooten 28 years ago back in 1967 with many expectations for the camp and for himself. Camp William T. Wooten is an Environmental Learning Center located about 24 miles up the Tucannon.

March 26, 1970

Mrs. Wayne (Sue) Bell suffered injuries Thursday, March 19, when she was thrown from the horse as she and her husband were riding uphill to make repairs on a TV antenna. She will be confined for two to four weeks.

The FFA Chapter to Seek Second Title. The Crops judging and Weed identification team members from the Dayton chapter will compete in the state finals at Washington State University in Pullman as defending champions March 28.

Mrs. Pearl Blize, and Miss Zelma Kunkle, both long-time first grade Dayton teachers, and Mrs. Olive Smith, sixth grade teacher during the past year, submitted their resignations to be effective at the end of the school year.

Nae G. Turner has purchased historic Lyons Ferry from the late operator Ervin Ritter who turned over possession immediately. Mr. Turner, though most recently from Pasco, was for some time a resident at Maryhill where he operated the Maryhill ferry.

March 20, 1920

More grief for gasoline users is indicated by a raise in price this week of two cents a gallon. The price has been 29 cents a gallon, now it is 31 cents.

SIGNS BILL FOR BRIDGE. Wilson Affixes Signature is Law for Structure over Columbia River. Construction of Wagon Bridge across the Columbia River between Pasco and Kennewick is proposed to be over half a mile long (2,740 feet) and about 64 feet above high water and about 84 feet above low water.

The little son of John Fouts met with a serious accident Monday while playing with a butcher knife. Iin taking the knife off a table, it slipped through his hands cutting his face badly.

Charles Bishop, John Hawkins and S. Holmes started for the Snake River Thursday morning to try a new gold machine, they will operate about four miles west of Lewiston on a river bar.
