Liberty Theater to stage "The Sound of Music"

DAYTON–Touchet Valley Arts Council announced that “The Sound of Music” will be the Liberty Theater’s fall live performance, said Mike Ferrians, manager.

“Although the calendar is not yet clear for the summer months,” Ferrians said recently, “one thing is clear: this year’s annual fall musical–”The Sound Of Music”–will be even more important than we thought it would be.”

Ferrians and Brenda Henderson, both veterans of Liberty Theater live productions, will direct the show which tells the story of the fabled Von Trapp Family Singers as they escape their native Austria rather than submit to Nazi rule.

“It’s a love story set during a time of severe challenge and conflict,” Ferrians said. “Music has always enabled us to endure, survive, and realize how important we all are in the face of adversity.”

The 2020 Variety Show, “Memories,” which had been set for performances in March, is postponed. Auditions for TVAC’s murder mystery melodrama, “Murder’s in the Heir,” by Billy St. John, have also been postponed. Shows had been slated for the second and third weekends in May.

Closed under state coronavirus restrictions, TVAC recently received a $5,000 grant from Humanities Washington, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, which received CARES funds.

A $1,000 general support grant has been received from the Oregon Community Foundation, through the C.M. Bishop Jr. Family Fund.

“Like all small community theaters, our financial position during the pandemic depends on the generosity of our donors and our grant partners for future programming,” Ferrians said. “Although we cannot know at this point when we will be able to open again, when we do we will operating with all safe procedures in place and limited seating capacity to allow for appropriate distancing.

“We look forward to opening our doors once more to community, connection, laughter, inspiration and joy,” he said. “This is an opportunity to reflect, learn and build our anticipation for gathering again.”
