Scenes like this of happy classmates parading Dayton's Main Street will have to wait until next year as the Alumni Association Weekend in July has been canceled.

DAYTON–The Annual High School Reunion of Dayton High School, scheduled for July 17-18, 2020, is canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Alumni Committee regrettably reports.

"We met and discussed it and decided that it would be irresponsible to bring people from across the county to town," said Cara Watts, Alumni Association President. "To me the safety of my community is more important than an event. It's super sad that we can't have it."

Watts said the decision made last week was prompted by individual class reunion organizers advising the Association that they wouldn't be holding reunion gatherings. She also acknowledged the risk associated with the fact that many alumni revelers would be in the high-risk age group of 65 and above.

Other alums communicated with Alumni Weekend organizers, urging a decision so that travel plans could be made.

"It is difficult to know what the situation will be by July, and alumni need to confirm travel plans," the Committee said in a release.

"We regret this decision but look forward to seeing all of you in July, 2021.

"It was sad, but we bit the bullet," Watts said.
