DAYTON-The Columbia County Commissioners met with County 4-H Program Coordinator, Donna Hanger during their work session on August 10 to discuss fairground use. In particular, August 29, a horse show is scheduled in the indoor arena and there will be 13 participants. Hanger assured that they should be able to keep social distancing and wear masks. The following morning, they will hold a horse event at the outdoor arena by the grandstand. These events are planned to run as long as school remains in session. School is scheduled to start August 24.

The Commissioners also met with the Umatilla National Forest and Walla Walla Fire Management Personnel including Umatilla National Forest District Rangers, Susan Piper and Aaron Gagnon whose primary job is to manage the forest habitat. Since COVID-19, Piper reported their offices have been closed but information with contact phone numbers have been posted.

County Commissioner Chuck Amerein mentioned a recent visit up to the Ranger Station and that the road in the Columbia County portion of the route appeared to need a good amount of maintenance particularly where the pavement ends around Godman. Piper replied that the Forest has a shared road manager with Public Works and that she has spoken with County chief engineer, Chuck Eaton who she says is focused on flood damage. The National Forest has their own road manager, who will be taking on some projects. Washington Department of Transportation usually comes in to manage some of the roadwork but because of COVID-19, did not make it this year. The Forest Rangers agreed they would check up on the projects.

Mike Moore Walla Walla Fire Management Officer indicated that the current fire activity has been lighter than usual for this time of year because the upper elevations are not overly dry.
