Two longtime Columbia County 4-H Leaders, Donna Hanger and Lawana Harting, whose dedication in local 4-H program spans over four decades, are being inducted into the Washington State 4-H Hall of Fame at the Washington State 4-H Leader’s Forum.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

September 13, 1995

August 30, 1995, Todd Powell presided over the Court of Honor held for Boy Scout Troop 313 of Dayton. Participating members of the Court of Honor were Don Palmer, Don Fulbright, Monte Fulbright, Don Scribner, Victor La Vanway, and Owen Agenbroad, holder of the Silver Beaver Award. Those receiving awards are Sportsmanship Merit Badge to Jesse Fulbright, Tenderfoot Rank Awards to Isaac Angel and Chad White.

Fifty Years Ago

September 17, 1970

Style Revue winners were 12 girls who received purple ribbons placing for the State 4-H Fair following the annual 4-H Style Revue. , those placing are Connie Fletcher, Kris Juris, Pam Sunderland, Ann Whipple, Rhonda Ahlsten, Polly Cowen, Trinka Harvey, Mary Sue Evers, Karen Richter, Susan Jennings, Jody Jennings and Sharon Welch.


Grant Low, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Low, a senior at Dayton High School, has been named a semi-finalist in the 1970-71 National Merit Scholarship Program, announced Principal John Harris. He is among 14,750 semi-finalists who are among the nation’s most intellectually talented high school seniors.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

September 13, 1945

Potent Skunk Perfume. Dingle’s has in some new, high-quality, concentrated skunk aroma—imported from the state park in box by Bert, Jr. It seems that the Phi Delts at the University of Idaho want this skunk, but Bert gave home folks a treat first by keeping it down at the store all day a week ago.


Used Cooking Fat Still Badly Needed. The American Fat Salvage Committee was given an official mandate to accelerate the collection of used cooking fat to offset the most serious fats and oils shortage in this country’s history. It is just as important now as during the war to save every bit of used fat.

Troy Criss Opens Linoleum Shop, going into business for himself, Troy Criss will open a Linoleum specialty shop in the Mrs. W. T. Wooten building at 166 East Main. Troy has been employed by the C. E. Suffield store for the past 18 years, resigning the middle of July.

While coasting down the Main Street hill on a bicycle, Carl Kimball lost control of his machine and rode under a horse, the animal kicked Carl on the knee bruising it badly.
