The Columbia County Sheriff’s office is asking for the assistance of all residents of Dayton and Columbia County for information about a recent string of residential and commercial burglaries that have occurred over the past month in and around Dayton.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

October 11, 1995

Mrs. Mc’s Country Classics now has a new owner, new hours and new items, and a new line of women’s clothes, stated the new owner, Brenda Himmelberger.

First Win of the Season. The Lady Bulldogs finally clinch a volleyball win as they dispatched a small White Swan squad. The win put the smiles on the girls’ faces and on the coaching staff, as they now know they can still do it.

Fifty Years Ago

October 8, 1970

Miss Lia Russell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Russell of the Tucannon district, was named Miss Congeniality during the Miss Rodeo Washington 1970-71 competition held at the Othello Rodeo. She is a princess on the 1970 Dayton Days court.


The concave delegates for the Dayton Chapter of Future Farmers of America, Karl Richter, chapter sentinel, Jerry Moyer, Chapter president, Mark James, chapter treasurer, Ron Harting, chapter delegate, and Jay Schafer, chapter secretary will be represented at the 43rd National FFA Convention.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

October 11, 1945

Crossler’s pool hall, in the family for 35 years, has changed hands as a result of a deal consummated Monday when Charley Crossler sold the business to the co-partnership of Arlie Fullerton, Vaughn Hubbard and T. C. Mugrage. The new owners appointed Virgil Barclay as operator.


The Local Infantile Paralysis Chapter has set up a plan for treatment at Dayton and if complications arise, for speedy transportation of anyone stricken in Columbia County to a medical center, including the use of an iron lung can be administered to the patient.

One Hundred Years,

October 6, 1920

Fred Hager has a new valve for inner tubes for auto wheels that has an air pressure gauge that is visible at all times. One can tell at a glance the amount of pressure on his tire.

Death Pall—Petrograd, Starvation, Filth, Sickness, Lack of Fuel Curse Once Bright City, reported by Finnish Red Cross. Streets and houses choked with filth spreading spotted and intermittent typhus, cold weather will finish the task with pneumonia and abdominal typhus, fuel so short wooden houses and sidewalks tore up to provide fuel.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

October, 1895

Miss Dorr desires to announce to her friends that she will begin a select dancing class at her home on Friday evening, Oct. 11, from eight until ten. A good canvas and music have been secured and all desiring to enter the class are requested to be present, Terms, $5 for Twelve lessons.
