Dayton High School students placed fourth out of all schools in the State of Washington on the Science portion of the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) which recently replaced the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) test.

For the 24th year, Dayton Kiwanis presents Turkey Bingo, to be held November 20 in the Dayton Elementary Multipurpose room, with doors opening at 3 p.m.

Dayton man sustained L.D.S. Bishop. Thirty-five-year-old Monte Fulbright was sustained as Bishop of the Dayton Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints September 17, 1995. Bishop Fulbright works for the Columbia County Hospital District as a Medical Technologist.

October 29, 1970

Tom Bowen, employee of the Columbia County Road Department, will step into retirement as of October 31 to conclude a 14½ year career with the county dating back to April, 1956.

Daytonite New Director for California Firm. Phillip C. Frick, son of Dr. and Mrs. W.V. Frick, has been appointed to the position of director of the Multifamily Apartment Division of Levit and Sons of California Inc. a subsidiary of International Telephone and Telegraph.

Leo Henry and his son-in-law, will be honored, as 1970 Conservation Farmers on Columbia County. They and their wives will be recognized at a noon luncheon of the Dayton Kiwanis Club with participation by Columbia Soil & Water Conservation District and the Dayton Jaycees.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

October 25, 1945

Troy Criss opened New Store Monday. A large crowd attended the opening of the new furniture and linoleum store, to extend congratulations, inspect the stock and place orders for early deliveries. The new store is located in the old Wooten building which was recently a garage.

Apple Pickers Badly Needed. Columbia County is in danger of losing $100,000 worth of apples unless enough additional pickers can be secured to harvest the remainder of the crop.

Local Ration Office to Close. Without official confirmation, it is expected the local War Price and Ration office will be closed the latter part of November.

One Hundred Years Ago

October 27, 1920

Armed guards were being rushed in East Port, Id., on the international boundary to protect the cars of the Spokane International railway from bootleggers, who are importing large quantities of liquor in the merchandise cars on the Canadian side.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

October 26, 1895

W. S. Wooten of Starbuck was in the city Wednesday with a wagon load of honey for sale. Bee culture is getting to be quite a profitable industry in this county, and it is going to grow.

The sheriff discovered a case-knife, two files and a piece of another knife in the sewer of the jail, all within reach of the prisoners. The case-knife was sharpened like a dagger at the point and the back half the blade on both sides was made into a saw.

American sheep are still going to market in vast numbers. August 1894, was known as virtually panic month so great was the rush of sheep into the Chicago market. The report of August, 1895, shows an increase of 40,000 head over that of the corresponding month the preceding year.
