Ten Years Ago

4-H program recognizes commitment of members, leaders and supporters during Columbia County 4-H Achievement night, held at the multipurpose room of Dayton Elementary School, November 14, 2010, following a potluck dinner.

The Saturday before Thanksgiving, the twenty-fourth annual Kiwanis fund raising “Turkey Bingo” is slated for November 20, with a stage loaded with 100-plus turkeys, holiday packages, ski specials, sporting event tickets, golf outings, getaways and numerous gift items. It will be held at the Dayton Elementary Multi-purpose room with the Kiwanis club members and assisting groups to help with the food and drink.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

November 15, 1995

Last Wednesday night the Dayton Chamber of Commerce honored Bette Lou Crothers as “Citizen of the Year”. Bette Lou was lauded for her many years of community service, including six years on City Council, four years as Chamber President and her years on the Dayton Task Force.

Awards Dessert Honors Sports Players. Parents, players, fans and coaches gathered for an awards dessert. Ryan Laughery was presented his letter in Cross Country, football cheerleaders received their certificates and letter from advisor Trish Tvrdy, volleyball players and managers were honored by their coaches Staci Kingenstein, Debbie Cannington, and Donna Donnelly,

Fifty Years Ago

November 19, 1970

Ray Davis Presented Scout Life Rank at Honor Court. The red heart of the Life Scout rank was presented to Ray Davis during the Court of Honor for Dayton’s Boy Scout Troop 332. The presentation of the badge, just one step below Eagle Scout, was by Mike Agenbroad, chapter chief for the Order of the Arrow. Davis is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Watson “Todd” Davis.

Bright and Shiny, Robert Beatty, who is working toward his Eagle Scout rank, is preparing Main street trash containers for new paint as his community service project for the Boy Scout advancement. He is the son of Harold and Ester Beatty.

R. M. “Bud” Burke Earns Promotion to Sp/5 at Panama Canal Zone Post. U.S. Army Specialist 5 Burke is a topographic computer with the Inter-American Geodetic Survey at Ft. Clayton, C.Z.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

November 15, 1945

Military Services Kicking Them Out. Alvin Burdick, Army in France and Germany is discharged; Jack Black, Navy, 38 months with 32 months of them rated as sea duty in the Atlantic-Pacific area; Wally Warwick, a pilot in Navy air transport service; Hubert Donohue, since completion of his flying mission on a Flying Fortress in England; Vaughn Hubbard, returning from the Pacific where he was a Navy bomber pilot.

One Hundred Years Ago

November 10, 1920

Saturday, the A. J. Carlson home, one of the oldest on Eckler Mountain, was completely destroyed by fire. The Elmer Carltons who were living there were away from home at the time and the cause of the fire is unknown.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

November 14, 1895

Wincel Abel and Tom Watts rescued stranded hunters that were located at their camp at the end of the road beyond Twin Buttes, in snow seven feet deep. According to Game Protector W. T. Wooten, it would be a mile and a half from the Touchet “to the top of the ridge”, four miles from there to Godman, 16 miles from Godman to Twin Buttes, and some little distance from there to the end of the road.
