“Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received.

Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling.

Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse.”

– Henry Van Dyke

By Kristie Korslund

It’s the season for Thanksgiving. Everywhere we look we are reminded to give thanksgiving, be thankful, grateful, appreciative; with these reminders it becomes easy to silently give thanks or feel gratitude. Certainly, gathering together for a Thanksgiving meal is a simple opportunity to give thanks and express our feeling of gratitude; but how often outside of the Thanksgiving season do we act upon our feelings of thankfulness? Do we give thanksgiving throughout the year? I’m sure we each feel gratitude in our daily lives but do we return the kindness with thanksgiving?

I encourage all of us to spread a special type of kindness through thanksgiving everyday not just when we are reminded, or fulfilling a tradition. We should be grateful in our daily lives. Let us continue showing kindness towards others and spreading thanksgiving for the kindness we receive.

The staff at Dayton Memorial Library are full of gratitude this holiday season from all the community support we have received this past year. Many changes have occurred with many more to come, but we continue to move forward with confidence due to our community support. May you have a warmhearted Holiday.
