Ten Years Ago

On March 6, Cimmaron Perkins will be in Seattle to compete in the Scott Firefighter Stair Climb, a timed event for the more than 1,500 firefighters who participate. “My goal is to make the climb in 20 minutes,” Cimmaron stated. “Last year’s top time was in the 11 minute range and the record is near 10 minutes.”

Twenty-Five Years Ago

January 17, 1996

Business changes for 1996, Panhandlers Restaurant sold to Barbara and David Phinney, Cracker B’s was sold to James Webster, the Valley Truck and Auto on South Cottonwood, owner Bruce Grove sold to his son Ron Grove.

After a strong match last Monday at Riverview, Dayton was pinned by Connell. Coach Mass Boyd praised Ryan Jagelski, Carl Robanske, T.J. Gallaher and Ryan Meisaner for their individual wins. Jesse Fulbright and Tom Duckwork picked up team points. The Bulldogs had 32 team points, host Riverview had 45.

Fifty Years Ago

January 21, 1971

STATE TROPHY for securing the most associate members is held by Lester Eaton Jr., 1970 membership chairman for the Columbia County Association of Wheat Growers. Spokane County won in 1968, Douglas County in 1969, membership chairman for 1971 is Doug Lambert.

Owen Agenbroad joined the ranks of distinguished adult leaders in the Boy Scouts of American program as he received the Silver Beaver award during the 49th annual Recognition Banquet of the Blue Mountain Council held at Pasco.

Steven Marll, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Marll, arrived home with his wife and son Joe, after nearly four years in the U. S. Air Force. He had been stationed for the past 1½ years at Elmendorf AFB in Alaska.

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Sherwood have given Whitman College $100,000 for a pipe organ for Cordiner Hall.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

January 17, 1946

Bell bottom trousers, suit of navy blue, the traditional uniform worn by sea-faring men since the 14th century, are soon to fade into oblivion. The blue and white are dress uniform, while the gray is primarily the working uniform. White trousers may be worn with the blue battle jacket in warm weather, and will keep their pea jackets.

Former Army men who have been honorably discharged can reenlist within 20 days after discharge in the grade held at time of discharge provided they reenlist before Feb.1, 1946. There is a long list of attractive reenlistment privileges in the New Armed Forces Voluntary Recruitment Act of 1945.

One Hundred Years Ago

January 12, 1921

Desert Land Available, 8,000 Acres to Be Opened to Homestead Filing Next Month. Desert lands in Harney and Malheur counties will be opened to public homestead entry from February 25 to March 17.

Charles Broughton suffered a very severe injury Monday morning while splitting kindling. The ax-head left its handle and came down upon his left hand severing an artery, cutting tendons and making a deep gash requiring eight stitches to close.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

January 18, 1896

The newly discovered illuminant, Acetylene the New Gas, a small tankful of it will supply a house for month.

Positive announcements coming from Indianapolis concerning the much talked of engagement of ex-President Harrison and Mrs. Mary Scott Dimmock, though neither one of the contracting parties will say a word.
