January 28, 2021

DAYTON–The Port of Columbia County Commissioners welcomed new full-time Office Manager Melody Shahan at their monthly Board meeting on January 14. Shahan is a much-needed addition to the Port to the Executive Director, Jennie Dickinson and part-time Kelly Hinds. Chair Earle Marvin welcomed her which was echoed by Commissioner Shawn Brown. Dickinson said that they are “really glad to have her.”

Dickinson reported the end of year balance was $22,000 less than anticipated because of default tax collections. This affects the 2021 beginning budget. Collection is expected.

The Port Commissioners have requested of the Director the drafting of a Succession Plan should anything happen while in her position. The Plan was presented and adopted with the intent to review it in six months.

Dickinson reported that the Small’s Family Farms is vacating the Rock Hill Industrial Park as a result of COVID. She said that a current tenant may expand or she’ll defer to their waiting list. Also, the garden tenant at The Blue Mountain Station is leaving. Dickinson hopes to find someone for the $25 per month rent plus water in the summer. The tenant has use of the greenhouse and the kitchen for washing produce for selling in the Co-op. Additionally, it was reported that the Cut and Wrap will be opening with new owners from Table Rock Meat Company this Spring which will be an asset to the community.

The public meeting for the Touchet Valley Bike Trail will be scheduled when the 30% design plan has been given to the Commissioners for review from Anderson Perry. The meeting is anticipated for the early spring.
