Neeeeearly getting above the rim is Wolfpack forward Wyatt Costello, who with Sean Evans, were the game's top scorers with nine in Dayton-Waitsburg's 33-29 loss to Mabton.

FINLEY–In the first home game of the 2021 COVID basketball season, a make instead of a miss here or there was the difference in Dayton-Waitsburg Wolfpack's 33-29 loss to Mabton May 20, on the heels of the season-opening 42-27 win at Walla Walla Valley Academy May 18.

DW downed River View on Saturday 54-44, then defeated TriCities Prep 40-34 at home Tuesday, May 25 (results next week) and travels to Columbia-Burbank Thursday, May 27, then and hosts WWVA Friday May 28.

The low-scoring 33-29 game with Mabton was fast-paced but with low percentages, the Wolfpack hitting just 27% of its two-point tries in a game that could have shifted in their favor with just a few baskets that dropped instead of caroming away.

Sean Evans and Wyatt Costello shared game-high honors with nine points each with just four players in the scoring column. Leading the Vikings was Jose Ramos with eight.

DW dominated the defensive boards through three quarters before the Vikings began to scrap for rebounds in the fourth quarter as they made their come-from-behind run.

Mason Finney got the game started on the right note by sluicing a three, and Evans made an and-one to give the Wolfpack a 6-0 lead. Costello and Dylan Bledsoe, who hit a pair of treys in the game, chipped in buckets for DW to lead 11-7 after eight minutes.

Mabton bounced back and made it 12-11 before the DW offense adjusted to pressure and Costello and Evans scored while the Vikings went cold the last five and one-half minutes. DW led 18-13 at half.

DW's Sean Evans puts a little pressure on Mabton's Sam Vasquez, hoping to disrupt the Viking offense. Mabton came up with just the few points needed in the end game to hold off the Wolfpack 33-29.

The Vikings outscored DW 7-4 in the third and 13-7 in the final stanza, tying it with a Jenoah Farias bucket early in the fourth and never giving up the lead. DW went 3:39 in the third and six minutes in the fourth quarter before Costello broke the drought with a basket with 1:53 to play.

After Costello's bucket, Bledsoe drained a three to make it 30-27 with a minute remaining but Mabton milked the clock and Farias scored again to keep the Vikings ahead. Finney made a twisting bucket as the buzzer sounded.
