Filing week brings multiple races for local elected positions

June 3, 2021

DAYTON–The August 3 Primary Election will have a number of races, one a three-way contest, in a variety of local elected positions.

Two candidates have filed to challenge incumbent Sean C. Milligan, Port of Columbia Commission District 3: Johnny Watts of 118 Main Road, Dayton, and Jack Miller of 632 Lower Hogeye Road, Waitsburg. The Primary Election in August will narrow that race to two candidates seeking the six-year term.

Another Port Commissioner also has a challenger. District 1 Commissioner Shawn Brown of Dayton and Seth Bryan, 812 E. Clay Street, Dayton, will both vie for the unexpired four-year term. Brown was appointed to fill a vacancy when Dan Aschenbrenner moved out of district in August, 2020.

Three of the four positions up for election on the Dayton City Council show two candidates vying for the position.

Council seat 1 will have Laura U. Aukerman of 300 S. 1st Street and Boe Stevenson of 1306 S. 3rd Street both seeking election for the four-year term.

Position 3 on the Dayton City Council shows Cindi John of 1401 S. 5th Street and Teeny McMunn, 308 E. Clay Street, filed for election to the four-year term.

Council Position 7 is the third race, with Fred Crowe of 309 N. 2nd Street and Tyler Dieu, 702 N. 1st Street, filing for the spot.

Marchand Hovrud filed for Council No. 5 and will run unopposed following withdrawal of candidacy by incumbent Christine Broughton.

All city council terms are for four years.

There are two races forming for seats on the Dayton School District Board of Directors. Incumbent David D. Bailey, 306 E. Washington Avenue, and Korinda Wallace, 511 E. Washington Avenue, will face off for the four-year term for Director No. 1. Director No. 4 will be a race between Aneesha Dieu, 702 N. 1st Sreet and Anna J. Berg, 724 S. 3rd Street, for an unexpired four-year term.

Recent appointee Grant Griffen, an incumbent, of 311 W. Clay Street, will be unopposed for Position No. 3's unexpired two-year term, and Jeff McCowen, 417 N. Willow Street, is unopposed for Position No. 5, a four-year term.

In the Waitsburg School District, two filed for Director District No. 3: Stephanie Cole and Ann Miller, both of Waitsburg, for the four-year term. Sarah Boudrieau of Waitsburg filed for District No. 1's unexpired two-year term and Lisa Morrow, Waitsburg, will be on the ballot for District No. 4's four-year term.
