OLYMPIA – July 20, 2021 – Washington State Parks requests nominations and applications for a winter sports enthusiast to represent Southeastern Washington on its Winter Recreation Program Advisory Committee (WRAC).

Nominations and applications for a non-motorized winter sports advisor position (cross country skier, snowshoer, dog musher, skijorer) close Aug. 30. Nominees must live in “Area 6” of the state - Adams, Whitman, Franklin, Walla Walla, Columbia, Garfield or Asotin counties. One advisor will be selected, and the appointment begins Oct. 1, for a term of three years.

The WRAC is made up of six members representing non-motorized recreation and three members representing snowmobile winter sports, all from across the state. The committee also includes one representative each from the Washington Department of Natural Resources, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and Washington Association of Counties.

The committee meets at least two weekends each year with one meeting held in the winter and one in the summer. The committee reviews vital issues about program policy and funding priorities for snow removal, trail grooming, sanitation, education and enforcement. The WRAC advises the Parks and Recreation Commission and staff about solutions to these issues.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission appoints committee members, who may serve up to two three-year terms. Travel, lodging and meal costs for the meetings are reimbursed for members.

The Winter Recreation Program manages more than 3,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, 300 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails and more than 120 Sno-Parks (plowed parking areas near snowmobile and cross-country ski trails).
