The 121st Columbia County Fair, “Sunshine Days and Country Ways” opens Friday with a wide range of entertainment provided by, Adam the Great, Magic, Nevada Slim and Cimmaron Sue, a singing duo, Brady Goss, Piano Man Extraordinaire, and a Street Dance on the Midway, Saturday night.

In the Columbia County Commissioner District 2, there are four candidates, two Democrats and two Republicans: Jane Lembcke, Tim Donohue, Don Jackson, Bob Mayse.
The Dayton Booster Club, returning officers for the 96-97 school year: President, Peggy Lusk, Vice-President, Adena Avery and Elsie Robins-Secretaries, and Donna Thomas-Treasure. The Booster Club provides financial support for many activities and projects.

Birthday Proclamation –100th birthday season for the City of Dayton has been proclaimed as September 21—November 23 by Mayor Paul Nelson. Present for the declaration were Dr. W.W. Day, president of Columbia County Pioneer Association and County Commissioner Roy Cadman, chairman of the 100th anniversary committee.
Miss Leslie Hughes, former Dayton student, spent six weeks this summer traveling in nine European countries as a member of a 60-voice choir sponsored by All-Students Groups, Inc. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hughes.
The 1971 Columbia County Fair Hostesses and Hosts are Pam Sunderland, Polly Cowen, Gene Warren and Jim Startin.
In celebration of the 81st annual fair, a new permanent sign marks the entrance to The Columbia County Fair Grounds at Main and Pine Streets. The presentation was made by Mrs. Merl Sullivan, Mrs. Jack Penner, Lawrence Turner, Jim Hanger and County Commissioner Roy Cadman.

Farmers Protesting Elk Herd Destruction of Farm Crops. A Petition was circulated among famers, protesting to the state game commission through the governor, the herd of elk reported to be damaging the crops in the areas bordering the forest reserve and the game preserves.
D. G. Adsitt, 25, was the victim of a tragic accident that occurred at the shingle mill on the old Cottrill place on Eckler Mountain about 16 miles from town Saturday afternoon. His family group, father-in-law, Frank Holtry, brother-in-law, Vernon Holtry and Gordon Spearman, came several months ago to establish a mill and homes on the mountain.
Cadet Richard E. Dunlap has been appointed Cadet Captain and Company Commander of Company M-2 of the United States Corps of Cadets Brigadier General G.J. Higgin Commandant of Cadets at West Point.

DOKKIE BAND UNUSUALLY FINE. Yesterday afternoon, the bank of Al Kindi Temple, D.O.K.K., gave a concert in the city park. The band made a fine appearance in their new uniforms which are among the best in the northwest, Director Ray Thompson accomplished much in his work with the band.
Dave Moffett, who recently moved to Waitsburg to work on the transfer system, has typhoid fever and was taken to St. Mary’s hospital in Walla Walla.

The Broolyn Mill Co., announces this week that it is ready to receive wheat and barley and it will be ready to make floor in a short time. It has been thoroughly overhauled and fitted with the best machinery of modern times and will be a permanent institution of the city.
Wednesday, October 14th, 1896, there will be a reunion of the old Union soldiers, sailors and marines of Columbia County. All honorably discharged soldiers, sailors and marines who wore the blue, bring your discharge papers or a document of service in the U. S. army, for those who wish to become member of the G.A.R. will be mustered into the Post.
