Ten Years Ago

The weekend event after Thanksgiving Day is celebrated as the Dayton’s “Christmas Kick Off,” with a wide, colorful schedule of events for both young and old, including the traditional Main Street Lighted Parade and the Tree Lighting Ceremony.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

November 20, 1996

Hundreds of turkeys will be given away Saturday at the Dayton Elementary School multi-purchase room as the Dayton Kiwanis Club calls “BINGO”. Kiwanian Bob Compson stated that the community has been very generous, “providing over 200 turkeys and almost that many other prizes!” in the club’s single biggest fund raiser that usually earns about $2,000, which goes to Scouting, the DARE Program, Swim Teams, 4-H Rocketeers, golf education and scholarships.

On the evening of October 26, the Dayton FBLA crew gather for their annual Junk Food Jamboree. Activities at the house of advisor, Rob Moore, included a barbecue, basketball, volley ball, and just plain fun. Followed by “Trick or Treat for the Food Bank” canned food drive, which many large boxes of food were gathered and donated to our local food bank.


Fifty Years Ago

November 18, 1971

Miss Diane Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Thompson, scored second place and received a trophy in the eastern area runoff for the Conservation Speech Contest held November 13 on the EWSC campus in Cheney. Thompson scored first place in both the local and district contest.

Before Columbia County was penetrated by railroads, the only transportation facilities available were stage coaches to Columbia River points and then by boat to Portland. If an ice blockade occurred on the Columbia River, it would shut off the county entirely.


Miss Jerilyn Jewett was the Washington State winner of a 4-H photography award, and will be honored by Eastman Kodak Company at the 50th anniversary 4-H Congress in Chicago.

Chuck and Trish Turner were named Young Couple of the Year by the National Grange during the contest finals held at Charleston, W.V. The Dayton couple captured the national honor in competition with 38 other couples from over the United States. The Turners had earlier been named Washington State Grange Young Couple of the Year, representing the Upper Whetstone Grange 1034 and Columbia County Pomona Grange.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

November 21, 1946

The late elk season perhaps has furnished some relief to border-line farmers, insomuch as the early special season check out 82 and the regular season took out 267 elk from Columbia County. For the three counties, Asotin, Garfield and Columbia, more than 800 elk were killed, with an additional 33 elk during an early season.

Two prized purebred Chester White gilts came to Columbia County. Asil Gaines, purchased a prize-winning gilt and the Columbia County 4-H Swine Club purchased another prize-winning gilt to improve the holdings of club members, at the Pullman sale. The 4-H gilt was turned over to swine club member, George Oliver who will keep the first litter, turning back two pigs to the club.

One Hundred Years Ago

November 19, 1921

County Agent J.M. Lewis returned from Tillamook, Ore., where he made arrangements to buy and ship into Columbia county two hundred of the best grade dairy calves for a large number of our farmers and farmer boys.

Earl Dunlap, captain and center of the Cougar football eleven, played his last collegiate game on Rogers field at Pullman, since he played his full three years and graduates at mid-term with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

November 21, 1896

Nine new loom have been added to the complement machinery operated by the Tacoma Woolen Mills Company, providing for a large increase in the products of the factory, whose continuous and successful operation is assured by the comparative of adjustments in the tariff schedules affording protection to American manufactures.
