WAITSBURG–Student-athletes from Dayton-Waitsburg Wolfpacks basketball and cheer programs were publicly recognized at a Sports Awards Night here March 30. Presentations were made by Cheer Advisor Vickie Hamann and Roy Ramirez, who coached both girls' and boys' basketball programs.

Cheer Advisor Hamann presented varsity letters or pins to Julia Brooks, Lanie Crowe, Victoria Rapoza, Suri Vela, Wyntr McCauley, Ashley Essency and Sarah Shutters.

Cheer squad members who were scholar-athletes were Rapoza, McCauley, Essency and Shutters.

Shutters was also recognized as cheer captain and as the Most Valuable Player.

Most Improved was Ashley Essency.

The Coach's Award went to Suri Vela due to her dedication, positive attitude, school spirit and creativity, Hamann said.

Ramirez opened his presentations with gratitude to parents of student-athletes, the players, school administrators and athletic director, scorebook keepers, cheer squad and his wife, Kristin. Ramirez was assisted by Carly Benavides for the girls and Colby Starring and Terry Bartlett for the boys.

The short-handed DW girls were "awesome" as they improved during the season, Ramirez said. At one point, forfeiting a game was discussed due to only six players. "We got six!" Ramirez exclaimed, and they played the game anyway, though they were winded and a couple were in foul trouble.

"Our focus was on working hard and confidence," Ramirez said.

Receiving a varsity letter or pin were Makenna Barron, Alyssa Hollingsworth, Grace Trump, Teagen Culley, Kamryn Tupling, Jessika Lambert, Megan Forney and Sagelyn Kilts.

"With small numbers," Ramirez said of Forney and Kilts, "for seniors to step up and play, it says a lot."

Scholar-athletes were Barron, Hollingsworth, Trump, Culley, Tupling and Kilts.

Barron was awarded a plaque as Ms. Wolfpack Defense.

Most Valuable Teammate was Kamryn Tupling.

Coach's Award went to Megan Forney and Sagelyn Kilts.

Alyssa Hollingsworth received the Most Improved plaque.

Honored Wolfpack basketball athletes included, from left, Dylan Bledsoe, Keon Lindley, Ryland Kilts and Monte Pettichord. Bledsoe received a Coach's Award and was an All-League Second Team selection. Lindley received a Coach's Award and Kilts was named Most Improved. Pettichord was Most Valuable Teammate, Mr. Defense and All-League Honorable Mention.

The Wolfpack Alpha Dog Award, presented by Athletic Director Sam Korslund, went to Sagelyn Kilts.

Wolfpack boys dealt with a myriad of issues, Ramirez said, delays, upset practice schedules, players with covid, practice cancellations. "Then, when we'd have a game," Ramirez said, "we'd look pretty ragged. We had the talent, we just couldn't get over the hump of someone being sick or being injured."

Varsity letters or pins went to Blake French, Ryland Kilts, Nolan Korslund, Wyaitt Booth, Jasper Morrow, Monte Pettichord, Ruben Yutzy, Lucas VanHoose, Keon Lindley and Dylan Bledsoe.

Scholar-athletes were Kilts, Korslund, Morrow and Pettichord.

Pettichord, who Ramirez labeled "best point guard in the league," received the Most Valuable Teammate, Wolfpack Mr. Defense and All-League Honorable Mention.

Bledsoe was presented one of two Coach's Award and was named to the All-League Second Team.

Kilts was unanimous choice for Most Improved.

Keon Lindley received the other Coach's Award.
