Father Stu (Mark Walberg) is based on the true-life story of a boxer-turned-priest, Father Stuart Long. He has a self-destructive lifestyle and a severe motorcycle accident that forces him to change his life to help himself and others. The real Father Stu served in Helena Montana until his death.

Rotten Tomatoes critics rate this movie as 45% favorable, but audiences give it 94% positive ratings. Fandango says this is an "unflinchingly honest, funny, and ultimately uplifting movie". The Roger Ebert website summaries this movie as a film about "how it is never too late for redemption, transformation and forgiveness".

This movie is not for kids. Commonsense media states this movie has a lot of mature content and that violence includes a graphic traffic accident, a violent boxing sequence, and other bloody fight scenes. It also has extremely strong language. This movie is rated R for language. Runtime is two hours.
