Ten Years Ago

May 2, 2012

Future Business Leaders of America head for San Antonio, Texas. Dayton high school freshman, Caitlyn Robins placed in the three competitive events during the Washington State Future Business Leaders of America state conference and will represent Washington at the national conference in FBLA Principles and Procedures in San Antonio Texas. Malia Frame was elected as State Parliamentarian and Grant Heinrich will serve as Southeast Region Vice President, as state officers, they will attend the National FBLA conference as part of the Washington State delegation.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

April 30, 1997

A part of the annual celebration of Washington Public School Week observance, 34 junior students from Dayton, Prescott, Waitsburg and Pomeroy were presented Awards of Achievement in a ceremony at Pomeroy. Plaques recognizing extra ordinary achievement were presented to Tom Howard and Darci Bruegaman.


Dona Flynn of Pomeroy, provided horse-drawn wagon rides for the Dayton Elementary students who are currently studying pioneers and their migration westward in covered wagons.

National Prayer Day celebrated May 1, on the Court House lawn. U.S. Veterans presented the flags, while the Dayton High School band provided instrumental music, Kelli Voth sang “My Country ’Tis of Thee,” Shane Smith recited Governor Lock’s Proclamation to a crowd of a 100 people attending the ceremony.

The 1997 Prom Court, Shannon McMillen, Clay Hutchens, Emily Skalstad, Robert Carlton, Queen Shannon Leseman, King Daniel DeSiga, Jenny Richter, Michael Gembala, Stephanie Biegel and Carl Robanske, were honored.


Fifty Years Ago

May 4, 1972

Officers of Dayton Lodge 26, F & AM, have adopted white dinner jackets as their official dress for lodge functions. Current officers are Bill Gillis, Gordon Tritchler, Bruce Keith, Wesley Calkins, Fred E. Smith, Scott Becker, Robert Eckhardt, Curtis Barton and Ray Seaman.

Cabin break-ins on Skyline Drive and Eckler Mountain dating back to June 1971, were solved by Columbia County Sheriff Gary Von Cadow with the arrest of Ed Knight, 19 of Richland, David Crawford, 25 of Kennewick and a 17 year-old juvenile. All three were charged with second degree burglary.

Mary Sue Evers swept the FFA swine class exhibiting both the grand and reserve grand champions over all breeds. Becky Hatfield showed the grand champion FFA steer and Perry Patrick exhibited the grand champion 4-H steer during the recent Dayton Junior Livestock Pre-show.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

May 1, 1947

Meeting of the Columbia County Livestock Association a Success, it was estimated 400 people participated in the first annual picnic meeting, the dinner committee served a total of 600 who ate with the stockmen.

At the school board meeting, a contract was awarded to the International Business Machines Corporation to furnish fire alarm systems for the Central school and High school.

One Hundred Years Ago

May 3, 1922

The discovery and isolation of the typhus germ by Dr. N. Kritch, a woman, under the guidance of Professor Barakin, director of the Moscow biological institute, and is confirmed by Dr. Walter P. Davenport of Chicago, acting head of the medical department of the American relief administration in Russia.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

May 1, 1897

A Michigan man has designed a milk can of such form that a milkman, with not too many customers, can use a bicycle to make his rounds. The can, which is flat, is made just the size of the frame, so it fits exactly, and is fastened to the tubing by straps, with a faucet at the bottom, is provided to draw out the milk.
