Dayton High School alum Gordon Budke, Class of 1959, received the Eastern Washington University Lifetime Achievement Award. Budke was a CPA with Coopers and Lybrand for 34 years.

Alexander’s Chocolate Classics was welcomed to the business community last Friday as the business owners, Steve, Dian and Alex were introduced by Chamber Manager Brad McMasters and following a short descriptive of the business by Alex, Mayor Pro-Tem Kathy Berg assisted with the ribbon cutting.

Dayton School directors voted to hire an interim superintendent from a statewide list of retired superintendents until such time a strong pool of candidates could be gathered. Chairman Scott Marinella stated timing was difficult with just a few weeks remaining until school starts.

July 27, 1972

Bernard’s 410 Restaurant has been revamped, inside and out. Today’s establishment is a far cry from the closed restaurant which Bernie Streifling paid $146 for on April Fool’s Day 18 years ago.

Television ads from Zastrow Jewelers, Dayton Drug, Floyd McCauley, insurance, and Joe Groom realtor, will accompany programs on KXLY in Spokane on the subject of the 1972 World’s Fair in Dallas, Tex. Jolene Groom and Dan Mortimore Dayton natives who visited Dallas.

Tech. Sgt. Delbert L. Laughery received the Bronze Star for war service.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

July 24, 1947

A collision of cars on the new North Touchet road about 6 p.m. Monday evening put three in Brining Memorial hospital for treatment. Earl Ritzman, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Ritzman, suffered a broken arm, and Mrs. Adolph Leusohner and Mrs. Leo De Ford had minor injuries.

Work has started last week putting in a new floor for the high school gymnasium. The old floor has been rotting out for a number of years and has been patched repeatedly. This year the old floor is being torn out and new sills installed.

July 26, 1922

Showing at the Liberty Theater: Tom Mix in “Trailin’” along with a Sunshine comedy “Laughing Gas,” and a Gumps cartoon.

Mr. R.R. Rix has moved his auto ship into the Dantzscher brick and the Electric Shop is settled in the Chronicle building.

Fire of unknown origin destroyed the Portland Flour mill and seven flour and grain warehouses and the dwelling of manager E.F. Dunlap, causing a loss of approx.. $1,000,000 on July 22.

We understand that O.B. Logan will in a few days open a bakery and restaurant and grocery store in Day’s building next door to Kellogg’s building.

Miss Francis Spearman, a first class milliner of San Francisco, will open on Sept. 1st, a new millinery store in Dayton.
