Ten Years Ago

October 30, 2012

A Passion to Children. Sylvia Demaris, a local quilter known for producing several quilts a year, stopped sewing about four years ago. She stopped after grandson Jayden Dedloff was diagnosed with a severe form of epilepsy. As he showed improvement on medication, her motivation returned and she sewed for children in hospital, completing stacks of pillowcases that will donated to three children’s hospitals in Spokane and Seattle.

Invacare brought two hand cycles, both come standard with geared 27 speed Shimano Pro Shifters that are operated on the speed crank handle with a thumb button for the top three sprockets and a trigger finger lever for shifting between the lower nine sprockets to the Columbia County Fairgrounds to demonstrate.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

October 29, 1997

Following the flood of 1996, the Columbia County Highway Department’s Engineers office was faced with over 30 bridges which were out of commission due to flood damage. Some had the approaches washed out, 15 bridges suffered significant structural damage or serious scour damage.


Elk Drug Continues its History in New Location. When Paul and Marcene Hendrickson moved the Elk Drug to its new location, it has a history all its own. It has a soda fountain that is a part of Dayton’s past. Ed McGuckin operated one early soda fountain as part of a confectionery off the Dayton Hotel Lobby which was completed in 1891.

Fifty Years Ago

November 2, 1972

The American Society of Agronomy honored the developer of Gaines and Nugaines, wheat varieties which hold world yield records and have brought millions of dollars of additional income to the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Orville A. Vogel, USDA-ARS agronomist stationed at Washington State University, received the Edward W. Browning Award which is given annually by the society to “an individual who has made outstanding achievements in the improvement of food sources.”


Airman Wayne K. Rouse, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Rouse, has been assigned to England AFB, LA., after completing Air Force basic training. Airman Rouse has been assigned to a unit of the Tactical Air Command for training and duty in aircraft maintenance.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

October 30, 1947

I. E. Cummings, who has been operating a watch repair shop, is moving to the location being vacated by the Farm Labor office, which is closing.

One Hundred Years Ago

November 1, 1922

What is Prudence? Was told by an old school teacher, he said: “Have an eternal guard upon what goes into your mouth and what comes out of it, and always wait a little before you answer, and answer all unpleasant questions by asking another question, and never before you can begin with a smile.”

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

October 30, 1897

In view of the great prominence Alaska has achieved, owing to the recent gold discoveries, and the importance of definitely fixing the boundary line between our territory and that of the Dominion of Canada, the senate, when it assembles in December, will take early action on the treaty pending between great Britain and the United States and marking off the 141st meridian.
