DAYTON–Due to the small number of completed applications for the position of Dayton School Superintendent, the Educational Service District (ESD) overseeing the process has asked the Dayton School Directors to consider extending the original deadline for applications to January 10, Directors discussed at the January 8 meeting.

After discussing the changes that will need to be made regarding meeting dates for scheduling the review of applications and the interview process, the Board agreed to extend the deadline for applications to Friday, January 17, 2020. The board will notify the ESD staff to determine what the impact of that extension will have on other meeting dates and timelines in the process.

Another item on the agenda was the reorganization of the Board. Katie Leid will continue as board chairwoman, and Dave Bailey will serve as vice chairman. The following positions listed are not offices and do not require a roll-call vote and will be appointed by a majority vote of the board.

The current practice of the board is to review each position after one year and determine if the member wishes to continue in their current position or would like to change. The current positions will be DW Combine and WIAA Representative-Dave Bailey (Asst. Fred White); Facilities Representative—Grant Griffen; Budget and Finance Representative—Dave Bailey; Public Relations/Community Outreach Representative—Katie Leid & Justin Jaech; Curriculum Representative—Justin Jaech.

The Legislative Representative held by Justin Jaech relates to the WSSDA Legislative work and it is suggested that this board member also take the lead in in assisting the superintendent with the communications to the local legislators on matters that are related to public education and the Dayton School District.

Negotiating Team positions are appointed. CCEA (certificated Staff)—Katie Leid and Grant Griffen; Classified Employees Group—Fred White; Dayton Support Staff (custodians)—Dave Bailey & Justin Jaech.

The Board members are continuing its self-evaluation using the workbook developed by the Washington State School Directors Association (WSSDA). As the board worked through the testing material, they concurred as a group, they identified they were very strong in some areas and in other areas they had some questions as to how effective their efforts have been in conveying their needs and concerns to the community, staff and students.

The information gathered during this process will be used in assisting in developing a positive working relationship between the Board and Superintendent. An electronic copy of the WSSDA standards is available on the WSSDA website or can be obtained by contacting Superintendent Johnson.
