Ten Years Ago

Dayton has a connection to the current Space Shuttle Mission. About ten to twelve years ago, a young woman spent the summer working for Ed and Pat Harri at the Wenaha Art Gallery before going on to student teach. Her name was Dotty Metcalf. She later applied for the civilian astronaut position with NASA and was accepted.

Sen. Mike Hewitt has received the Stanley O. McNaughton Leadership Award from the Independent Colleges of Washington.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

March 29, 1995

Camp Wooten Environmental Learning Center making quite a few changes and will be open year round. During the winter months this year, Ranger Monte Heil was hired on temporarily for six months and is hoping to make a career at Camp Wooten.

Lots of kids have been trying their luck at the juvenile fishing ponds at the park. The Touchet River has been open for a while and many people have been pulling out some good-sized fish.

Fifty Years Ago

April 2, 1970

Maurice D. (Dan) Eaton, son of Maurice Eaton and Mrs. Carlene R. Eaton of Walla Walla, was killed Friday, March 27, in a two-car head on collision 45 miles northeast of Walla Walla on the Casey Road.

A sturdy floor safe at Bill’s Thrift Store withstood the blows of burglars early Tuesday morning, March 31. Damage and merchandise loss was estimated about at $1,200.

Six-year-old Bud Herrera suffered a gunshot wound in his left foot March 31, when a .22 caliber rifle discharged accidentally while being examined by three nine-year-old youths.

Roger Beckel, Ag Cadet, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Beckel, is now at work in the vocational agriculture department at the Dayton High School as a cadet teacher for the spring term. Beckel, completed his fifth year at Washington State University for teacher certification will be working under the direction of Ag Teacher Marvin Evers.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

March 29, 1945

Mrs. Janet Kitterman-Tofte, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kitterman, joined the corps of the United States army. Since her graduation about a year ago, she worked as a cadet nurse at McCaw and the veterans’ hospital in Walla Walla.

From Eugene Parsons, writing thanks for the C-D: “I don’t know who in particular makes it possible for me and all the other boys in the service receive the C-D, but you can be sure that I appreciate it and even more when overseas. I am now in the Marianna Islands awaiting assignment to a unit.”

Ray Munden, who is with an army artillery outfit, has been stationed in Ingram Israel with the coast guard.

Frank Hawks says their daughter Marjory is an army nurse stationed in Burma.

One Hundred Years Ago

March 31, 1920

Big Stadium Coming; Determination to conduct a sales campaign throughout the State of Washington during the week of April12 to 18 inclusive for $500,000 to construct a mammoth athletic stadium upon the University of Washington campus at Seattle, was the result of a state-wide convention of Washington alumni held at the Elks club Seattle, March 21.

March 30, 1895

Mt. Pleasant! Jehhosipat! Everybody was busy putting their crops and preparing to make garden two weeks ago and now they are busy building fires trying to keep warm. It commenced snowing Wednesday morning and snow for forty-eight hours, cap the climax with a nice wind storm piling up great drifts.
