Ten Years Ago

April 21, 2010

Kellie Wessels will reign as queen of the 2010 Dayton Days event following coronation ceremonies at Running T Ranch. Princesses will be Madeline Jensen and Darci Hall. Wessels, the daughter of Alan and Sue Wessels, is a junior at Dayton High School. Her grandparents, David and Rosie Archer, were parade marshals in 2008. Jenson is the daughter of Pat Jensen of Dixie and Melissa Jensen of Dayton. Hall is the daughter of Marty and Ilene Hall.

Columbia County Prosecuting Attorney Rea Culwell announced her intention to see re-election to a second term.

Twenty-six members of the Dayton High School Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America traveled to Yakima, Wash., to participate in the annual State Business Leadership Conference. Senior Tucker Blessinger won first place in the American Project event, Junior Kellie Wessels placed second in the Electronic Career Portfolio event and sophomore Nathanial Steen place third in Database Design and Application. BLessigner, Wessels and Steen will travel to Nashville in July to represent Washington State FBLA in their respective events.

Local Artist Featured at Reception. It is a busy time for local artist Jill (Bramhall) Ingram, as she had an unveiling of a Courthouse water color painting at Nealey & Marinella’s office, on Saturday night. She is the featured artist at the Wenaha Gallery with nearly 30 paintings on display from April through May.

It’s the Law! Ordinance Number 1572 an Ordinance Creating A Juvenile Curfew and Imposing a Civil Penalty For Violation. No minor under the age of eighteen (18) shall be in or upon any public street, highway, alley, park, vacant lot or other public place in the City of Dayton between the of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. weekdays and 12 a.m. (midnight) and 5 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights.


Fifty Years Ago

April 16, 1970

Ten Boy Scouts from Dayton Troop No. 332 Earned the Paul Bunyon Awards At Camp. The boys are Mickey Hoon, Ritchie Gibson, Frank Whitney, Mike Dingle, Paul Hawks Jim Preston, Gary Wessels, Jim Simmons, Mike Agenbroad and Douglas Beck. The Paul Bunyon Award is earned by learning and then teaching another boy to care and the use of a hand ax, sharpening an axe and knife and the correct method of sharpening and care.

The Columbia County Homemakers Club sponsored three home economics scholarships and $125 to each of three girls, Mary Day Richter, Jennie Cowen and Kathy Evers and a 4-H camp ship was award to Lori James at the Annual 4-H Achievement Day and Style Show held in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Dayton School.

April 12, 1945

Soldier In Italy Writes Of Savagery Of German Army. The Dumas family received two letters from their son, Philip, who is a sergeant in the 85th MT Infantry, 10th Division fighting south of Bologna in the Apennines, Italy. People in the States think they understand what’s going on over here. I know Differently now, I’d never seen unarmed, plainly marked medics shot down by snipers, or ambulances, and aid station intentionally shelled, or guys slowly dying because our medics couldn’t get to them. I wish every civilian in the U.S. could be up here in just one “push.” Our post-war troubles would be solved.

Called up for induction this week: Owen Jones, Gene Elder, George Bailey and Lloyd Decker. Up for physicals: 1 Asil Gaines, Ervin Hayes, Roy Heath, Rolland Newby, Nathaniel Stevens, Leo Winnett, Naven Page, Harold McFall, Vyrl McQuary, Ross Isaacson, Adolph Chaples and Lester Martin.

One Hundred Years Ago

April 14, 1920

The Republican joint resolution declaring the state of war with Germany at an end and repealing most of the war-time legislation was adopted today by the House. It now goes to the Senate.

George Gross is getting ready to go on his old stamping ground herding cattle. John Tate is having a time in the storms hauling ten ton of salt up both forks of the Touchet to salt the stock on the range for this summer.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

April 13, 1895

Portions of the income tax law have been declared void by the Supreme Court. Owners of all kinds of bonds, including state and municipal and all income from real-estate, are exempt from taxation. It is the climax of the democratic misrule.
