DAYTON–Local resident Melissa McCowen, recently ran a half marathon here on June 6. She originally intended to participate in the half marathon in Seattle Wash., but it was canceled due to COVID-19 restriction. That did not stop her from challenging the 13.1-mile run, she just did it in a different place and way.

On a course set by her husband Jeff McCowen. McCowen, began her run on the start mark at the end of the South Touchet pavement running north down the road to the levy entrance of the Touchet River Dike at the southeast end of 4th Street. She followed the dike west passed the Flower Mill Park turning east on Main Street to the Patit Road at the top of the Seneca hill. She then continued east venturing by the Lewis and Clark Encampment monument to the Patit Creek. She then turned west toward Dayton to break the tape at the finish line located at Seneca parking area.

She challenged herself to meet competitive time goals of 11 minutes, 21 seconds per mile. Supported by friends and family along her running path, she accomplished the course in the targeted time totally two hours, twenty-one minutes; a person best.
