The Dayton-Columbia County Washington fund provided a check for $2,500 for the bronze of a Stationmaster that is being sculpted by Keith McMasters.

July 26, 1995

Miss Alyse Elizabeth Thomas, age 6, daughter of Billy and Naomi Thomas, has been chosen as a State Finalist in the Miss Washington American Princess Pageant to be held September 3 and 4 at the beautiful Sea-Tac Red Lion Hotel, Seattle.

The Elite-3, Nathan Cummings, Steve Baxter, Margo Jennings and Tanner Bickelhaupt, were Champions in the 11-14 division of the Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament during the Festival at the Depot.

Fifty Years Ago

July 30, 1970

Jim Windust is an executive housekeeper aboard the hospital ship S.S. HOPE which completed its Tunisian mission on July 14. He served with HOPE in Colombia and Ceylon as a staff member of the floating medical center.

Attending the “Know Your Government” 4-H conference, July 30, at St. Martin’s College in Lacey are Nola Simmons, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Simmons; Brian Munden, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Munden; and Ann Whipple, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Whipple.

Airman Zachery Z. Zink III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Z. Z. Zink of Starbuck, has completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. He is assigned to Sheppard AFB, Texas, for training in aircraft maintenance.

Robert J. “Bob” Seney escaped serious injury early Wednesday afternoon, when the combine he was operating skidded on stubble and overturned on a steep hillside at his farm in Smith Hollow.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

July 26, 1945

Roy Eslick, who is a medical aid man on a transport, was on the Dutch ship during an attack by three Jap torpedo planes on a merchant convoy at Ie Shima in the Aryukyus. Two were shot down; the third plane hit the ship, killing two American Navy gun crew members and two Lascar seamen. They were buried on Ie Shima, the little island adjoining Okinawa where Ernie Pyle was killed.

Corporal Robert L. Budig, 21-year-old Dayton Marine, was awarded the Bronze Star medal for heroism in action the Saipan battle last summer.

One Hundred Years Ago

July 28, 1920

Mrs. W. H. Coffin, State bakery, restaurant and food inspector, was in Dayton last week investigating conditions. After taking a whiff at Dusty Moore’s Refrigerator, she almost had to call for a coffin.

Mrs. S. Lamson, of Walla Walla, was badly bruised in an accident on Marengo Grade when a run-away team of mules ran directly into the Ford car in which Mrs. Lamson was riding.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

July 27, 1895

Within two weeks Henry Patrick will have a road into the Tukanon so that teams can go by the way of Eckler Mountain. The road will tap the Tukanon at the forks of the creek.

Dr. Lemman fills and extracts teeth without pain. No chloroform, ether or gas used. A small amount of cash required the day of extracts.
