Dayton High School internship program benefits students and community. Eleventh grade students have the opportunity to intern at a business downtown Dayton and get hands-on-training in the field in which they choose.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

March 6, 1996

Jerod C. McEwen, a senior at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, a son of Randy J. McEwen of Dayton and Lois E. Bell of Spokane, has enlisted in the Army’s Delayed Entry Program.

The three-month Tucannon River road closure, due to severe flood damage which virtually wiped out this section of the road, has delayed the fish plants, and cuts access to turkey hunting areas.

Fifty Years Ago

March 11, 1971

U.S. Air Force Technical Sergeant Delbert L. Laughery, son of Mr. and Mrs. George D. Laughery, is on duty at Tan Son Nhut, AB, Vietnam. The sergeant is a 1957 graduate of Dayton High School.

Sergeant Donald J. Trump, son of Joner and Mildred Trump, and a 1967 graduate of Dayton High School was fatally injured in car accident on Middle Waitsburg road. Graveside funeral service and interment at the Dayton City Cemetery with an honor guard from the 92nd Strategic Aerospace Wing from Fairchild AFB was held.

Three arrested by Sheriff Gary Von Cadow, Lawrence J. “Larry” Harvey, Russell L. McCormack, Don Katsel, Waitsburg, charged with Larceny, and Cattle Theft. The incident took place at the Lester Eaton Jr. ranch in Hatley Gulch when a calf was shot and transported from the scene in the trunk of an automobile.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

March 11, 1946

Claude Brodhead, pioneer turkey raiser, announces he is quitting the turkey business after 25 years, starting 1921 and since 1932 has marketed 15,000 birds.

“Pioneer” Merchant Making Come back. Construction was started this week on the new store building and cold storage locker plant of Joe McQuary and Sons, on the West main Street at the corner of Cottonwood.

Chuck Mead arrived home from Japan, before his departure he learned that he was credited with a presidential unit citation, which gave him enough points he could have returned home four months earlier.

One Hundred Years Ago

March 9, 1921

Dayton Boys Prominent at College, Earl Dunlap, captain of the 1921 football team of W.S.C. has been named one of the “Big Five” for 1921 Campus Day. Emil Lindley, was recently elected sergeant-at-arms of the junior class, was named on the publicity committee for the spring event, which is one of the most novel and worthwhile of the school year.

James Storey, who has been living at the Sutton place on 4th Street, has taken over Mack Wong’s place just outside the fair grounds and will grow the commercial garden this year.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

March 7, 1896

Attention Farmers, Have you seen that squirrel smoker at Gilmour’s? It does the work. This is the time of year to fight the pests and the only sure way to kill them. Sulphur smoke does the work.

White Fir Flat Notes. At the camp of Burrows, Gholson & Gwinn on the Touchet, and judging from the amount of posts and wood piled up along the flume, they must be doing a big business.

About eight inches of the beautiful fell here during the fore part of this week, accompanied by the coldest weather experienced during the winter. The ground hog theory don’t hold good in this neck o’ woods.
