Wolfpack Softball splits final twinbill

DAYTON–TriCities Prep came to town and went away knowing they'd played softball as the Dayton-Waitsburg Wolfpack fell short in a seventh-inning rally in the first game 8-7, but took a convincing lead for a 12-8 in the nightcap May 1.

In the opener, TriCities Prep trailed 5-3 going into the top of the seventh before having a big, five-run inning to take an 8-5 lead. Dayton-Waitsburg's seventh-inning came up one run short.

"We had too many crucial errors," commented Head Coach Carly Benavides. "We just didn't get enough base runners on base. They fought hard but just came up short two runs."

In the second game, TriCity Prep jumped on the Wolfpack, leading 4-0 in the third.

Bottom of the third, Dayton-Waitsburg rallied with four runs to tie it up. Neither team could plate runs in the fourth and DW held the Lady Jaguars scoreless in the top of the fifth before counting three runs in the bottom frame.

Ahead 7-4, pitcher Sadie Seney and the Wolfpack again blanked TCP in the top of the sixth, then put on five insurance runs in the bottom of the inning.

TriCities Prep put across four runs before DW made three outs, holding them off and counting the final game of the season a 12-8 win.

"Seney has stepped up in so many ways," said Benavides. "She has been a rock star on the mound and at the plate. She had a monster hit out of the park with two RBIs.

"This was Senior Night and Seney is our senior," Benavides said. "We are going to miss her greatly. She has been a phenomenal leader that is always ready and positive."

At Riverview on April 24, the Wolfpack split with the Panthers, getting edged 15-14 in the first game and rallying in the later innings for a 10-6 win.

"We got in too big of a deficit mixed with too many errors and not getting enough base runners," Benavides said of the 15-14 loss at Finley.

Megan Forney highlighted the second-game win with an in-the-park home run. "Forney moved quickly to gen an in-the-park home run," Benavides said.

"The team had some great hits," she added, "and we had a handful of errors that didn't hurt us too bad."
