Carl Cramer of Dayton Wine Works has organized a motorcycle poker run for Saturday May 21, beginning at the winery.

Waitsburg High School freshman, Beka Adams, daughter of Lanny and Ann Adams of Waitsburg, has been selected as the 2011 Dayton Days Queen.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

May 8, 1996

Dayton Jr. High Mathcounts team, coached by Dave Phillips, competed at both regional and state levels. Team members were Jonathon Thorn, Cathie Schuck, Rachel Coulter and Mary Reeves, placing third, and will continue to the state competition.

The 61st Junior Livestock Show of Spokane is dedicated to Roland Schirman, County Extension Agent, for Columbia County, and was an FFA member in high school. He has attended Jr. Show since 1980 and developed a computer program which has been in place since 1988.

Fifty Years Ago

May 13, 1971

Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Thorn will be highlighted as the annual Columbia County Cattleman of the Year for noon barbecue and honor tour at the ranch for 1971.

Robert Hutchens, senior and son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Hutchens, received the American Society of Agronomy Award to the Outstanding Senior in agronomy at WSU from Dr. J. D. Maguire at the recent 212th annual WSU Awards program.

In Vietnam, Army Specialist Five Gregory H. Nysoe, son of Mrs. Janis Nysoe, received the Bronze Star medal, for distinguishing himself through meritorious service against hostile forces.

Three youthful Columbia County stockmen, Ron Harting, member of the Dayton FFA chapter, Pam Sunderland, and Cindy Turner, both of the Fleecers 4-H Club, have championship honors at the Spokane Junior Livestock Show.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

May 9, 1946

R. E. McGee, chairman of the Dayton Days button committee, wants some girls to sell Dayton Days buttons. The sale is to be made on a contest basis with four prizes offered. The prizes offered is First $25. Second $20, Third $15, and Fourth $10.

Remie DeRuwe, Columbia County sheepman, and son, Mervin DeRuwe, bought the Taylor Sheep Company located in Glacier County, Mont., shipping 22,000 head of sheep to the Montana summer ranch for summer grazing.

One Hundred Years Ago

April 30, 1921

Sheriff Springer and his men proved real mountain sleuths when they hunted down three alleged moonshiners and secured eight gallons of moonshine on the headwaters of the Touchet River, arresting Leslie Nelson, C.C. Henderson and Lloyd Boling.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

May 16, 1896

Chas. Neilson, an aged Swede, who has made his home on Jim Creek for a number of years, was brought to the city in a helpless condition and is now a county charge.

Jim Stevenson, a tie maker on Maloney Mountain, cut his right foot quite severely last week with an axe, and brought to this city, where his family lives. For care and medical treatment.
