Ten Years Ago

June 15, 2011

Releasing “Hera the Hawk” was a bittersweet good-bye. Dayton resident and apprentice falconer Anne Dowdy will be returning Hera, a Red-tailed hawk, back into the wild. The hawk was hit by a semi-truck outside of Pendleton in December, 2009. During this time, Dowdy had just passed the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife test to become an apprentice falconer.

Adam Strohbehn coordinates free soccer camp for senior project. The Dayton High School Soccer team will once again be hosting a summer youth soccer camp for students who are entering grades 1-8 grade.

Dayton City Swimming Pool is the perfect place to beat those long hot days of summer. Carl Robanske will be spending the summer at the City Pool as a lifeguard.

Fifty Years Ago

June 17, 1971

Mrs. Sharril S. Torres, the former Sharril Seney, daughter of Mrs. Lawrence Neace and Robert J. Seney, received her nursing degree “Cum Laude” at the University of Washington in Seattle. She was initiated by Sigma Theta Tau, the only national honor society of nursing.

Peggy O’Neil, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pat O’Neil, completed her master’s degree work at the University of Washington. Her degree is “Master of Education in Educational Psychology with Specialization in Rehabilitation Counseling. O’Neal graduated from Dayton high School with the Class of 1962.

Ron Harting, senior member of the Dayton Chapter Future Farmers of America, and Jim Startin, junior chapter member, received the coveted State Farmer Degree during the State FFA Convention underway at the WSU campus in Pullman.

Technical Sergeant Delbert L. Laughery, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Laughery, received the Air Force Commendation Medal in Saigon, Vietnam, for meritorious service while stationed at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

June 13, 1946

Sawmill Men Also Have Their Trouble. Art Hanger, who operates Hanger’s Mill on upper 4th Street, has a few logs at the mill, but not enough to start sawing, and doesn’t know when they will have a sufficient supply.

Dayton Pre-School association announces that it will again sponsor kindergarten this coming fall since several parents have expressed hope that the work will be continued.

One Hundred Years Ago

June 8, 1921

Harvey Bamford and Steve Forney had a wild ride Saturday when the gears of Bamford’s truck broke and they rode atop of a cord and a half of wood at break-neck sped for three miles coming off Eckler Mountain.

Salmon in Local Streams. Owing to the efforts of T.W. Hanan of the Fixit Shop, who was instrumental in having the fishway re-opened at the Nine-Mile dam, salmon were seen in both the Touchet and the Patit las week for the first time in 15 years.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

June 13, 1896

Tukanon Puffs. Hooter Nest-Everything booming. Three settlers located this week. First, Ben Magill and son, located near the forks of the creek. Frank Waterman sold his mountain ranch and located on Tukanon and making fine arrangements to erect a fine building.

Twenty dollars reward will be paid by me to anyone who furnishes evidence convicting the person who burglarized the Relief Station warehouse and stole a therefrom about 80 sacks of oats.
