Positive COVID test nixes Lady Wolfpack games

DAYTON–Two games at the end of Dayton-Waitsburg Lady Wolfpack's basketball season, TriCities Prep and Columbia, were canceled after a member of the team tested positive for COVID-19.

"The players are quarantined," said Head Coach Tamira Culley, "and unable to attend Senior Night. They were told that morning that we had to be in quarantine."

Culley said she had talked to only a couple of players who had been contacted by Public Health regarind contact tracing. "We have been quarantining ourselves," she said.

The coach was appreciative of the four senior players, Wyatt Costello, Mason Finney, Shawn Evans and Colton VanBlaricom, who represented Lady Wolfpack Seniors Samantha Davis and Sadie Seney at Senior Night. "They did a good job," Culley said.

"It's hard for parents, too," she added, "not being able to stand up next to your kid after four years of dedication. It's sad. This has all been very crazy.

"I feel really bad for those girls," Culley continued. "Definitely, we feel heartbroken for Sam and especially Sadie. Sam's been a leader in her own right and Sadie has led by example and continued to play with girls that don't have the experience like she does and maintain a positive attitude."

In the team's final game, the Lady Wolfpack never clicked. "We just never got into it," Culley said. "There were bursts of good things that happened but we made too many turnovers.

"We did pretty good rebounding and that helped keep us in it, but there were just too many unforced errors, a lot of inexperience mistakes.

Culley praised the fortitude of the team under the circumstances. "They're still learning and we have a lot to build on for next year," she said. "They never quit. They kept trying and that's all I can ask.

"They had a good attitude and put forth their best effort."

At present there are no plans to attend team camp, Culley said, but she will be holding open gym in the summer for players wishing to improve their skills and stay in condition.
