COVID rearing its ugly head

September 2, 2021

DAYTON–Columbia County is experiencing an exaggerated number of COVID cases (35) locally and is considered a community spread right now, but they are not linked together. Columbia County Public Health Administrator Martha Lanman said this is a true community spread and it is very contagious.

It is not confirmed as of yet if the virus being experienced here is the Delta Variant because results from tests submitted to the State have not returned, but according to Lanman, the virus acts in that capacity.

As of August 31, Columbia County have 35 active cases with many direct contacts. "This is the highest active cases we have had since this pandemic has started," said Lanman. "My recommendation is to wear a mask, distance, if feeling sick stay home and get tested and follow healthcare provider guidance.

As of August 29, 2021 and according to the Department of Health website confirmed COVID cases in Columbia County are 124 with 112 probable cases, 23 hospitalizations and six deaths.

Vaccines have been made more available and are waiting for those wishing to take the jab. "We have increased our capacity for our vaccination clinics and have moved them to 270 E Main Street, said Lanmna. "We need to be thinking about everyone in our community and taking care of each other."
