PASTOR'S CORNER

A moment’s peace

October 21, 2021

An emotionally exhausted young mother confided to her friend that her children were so persistent and demanding that she would often lock herself in her bathroom just to get a moment’s peace. She longed for moments of quiet and relaxation. Likewise, there were times when Jesus was in great demand. Crowds often pressed upon Him, wanting His attention. On one occasion the house He was in was so crowded with people that men broke the roof apart to lower to Him their friend that needed healing. Jesus healed him. With so many demands placed on Him, Jesus often sought opportunities to withdraw to spend time alone with His Father in prayer. We may not be in great demand by others but there are still times when the world seems to crowd in on us. One of our hymns carries the phrase “fightings within, fears without.” When pressed upon by inner fears and troubling worries, we have a place to go. When we are confronted with fear because of worldly conditions and threats, we have a place to go. When we feel crowded inside, the shelter we seek always has room for us. It is never out of order, needing repair. It is always helpful and restorative. It is the same place Jesus went: alone with God! Is there a phrase that offers more potential? Is there a description that offers more hope or consolation? Alone with God!! Alone with God our troubles pale. Alone with God our fears are removed. Alone with God our tensions are released. Alone with God our burdens are lifted. Alone with God our sins are forgiven. Alone with God our wounds are healed. Alone with God! This is our remedy and our hope. There we meet with the One to whom we surrender with complete vulnerability and honesty. “You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.” (Ps. 32:7). “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you,” (Mt. 6:6). Access is granted through faith in Jesus Christ the Lord.
