Young Wolfpack Fast-Pitch hammered by Coyotes

April 14, 2022

DAYTON–Visiting Kittitas/Thorpe blistered the softball with hits and pounded the basepaths with runs in handing the Dayton-Waitsburg Wolfpack twin losses in an April 2 double header.

Kittitas clobbered 14 hits in the opener and waltzed away with a 19-3 win, then blanked the Lady Wolfpack in the second game while chalking up a ten-run second inning for a mercy-rule 19-0 win in three innings.

Wolfpack Fast-Pitch returns to the diamond Friday at 3 p.m. against River View, for a double header originally scheduled for Saturday, but moved up to allow players, coaches and community members to attend the memorial service for long-time Dayton coach John Donnelly.

The Friday following, April 22, DW travels to College Place to take on Walla Walla Valley Academy in a league twin bill.

Errors by the Lady Wolfpack did some damage in the first game, the 19-3 loss. “A couple of errors scored a handful of runs,” said Head Coach Carly Benavides. Chilly temperatures also played a role in DW’s struggles, she said.

Megan Forney pitched to Peyton Struckmeier, finishing the four-inning game without being relieved.

Kittitas pushed six runs across home in the first inning, caught some more momentum with nine runs in the second and capped it with four in the fourth while the Lady Wolfpack could only muster a first-inning run and two runs in the second.

Hendrix Groom and Madison Gallardo counted hits for DW. Kittitas’s Huber smacked a home run.

In the second game, Kittitas cruised to the three-inning, 19-0 shut-out with Nash pitching to Nevus.

For the Wolfpack, Kylee Henry started in the circle and was relieved by Gallardo in the second. Lila Hutchens was behind the plate.

“We struggled on the mound,” Benavides said. “We have a very young team filling a big role with [Sadie] Seney graduating last year.”

The coach is encouraged by the team’s development and grown in the last few weeks. “They are working hard in practice,” she said.
