Character trait or answer to prayer?

May 5, 2022

A wife was giving credit to how continually kind and gentle her husband was. The believer who was listening asked the husband, "Are you just that way or is it a result of something else?"

After 50 years of marriage to such a wonderful man, the wife was shocked to hear her husband respond, "I pray about it constantly". She had no idea. She had thought it a simple character trait but the husband knew his wife was giving him credit for something the Lord was really doing through him as an answer to prayer.

Gentleness isn't to be confused with weakness. Those who are gentle, patient, and kind didn't get that way by being weak but by being strong. Such gentleness is a sign of strength for it flows from the heart that is disciplined to put to death selfish passions and then rely on the Holy Spirit for His supply.

We are all subject to moments when we are inclined to unload our anger and frustration onto others. We can be intemperate and unkind by nature. It is the heart strongly and prayerfully yielded to the Lord that becomes a channel through which God's Spirit and love are outpoured. He can do it through each one of us.
