Word has been received that the Dukes Resort LLC Best Western will officially break ground on Saturday, June 16 at the corner of North 5th and East Main Streets.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

May 7, 1997

Dayton High School seniors Clay Hutchens and Dora Reeves were honored last week in the Blue Mountain Youth Awards and Sports Awards program. Hutchens has a 3.96 GPA and is involved in many school activities and named Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Dora Reeves has a 3.99 GPA and was honored for her scholastics, leadership, and citizenship and has received numerous special awards from the Elks, Masonic Lodge, FBLA and other organizations.

Perennial Wheat: the time has come? In an article by Stephen Jones, Timothy Murray, Ed Donaldson, John Burns and Roland Schirman Department of Crop and Soil Science Plant Pathology, Cooperative Extension, Washington State University. The ultimate incarnation of a “low-till/no-till” system would be to eliminate the planting process entirely.

Dayton School Board approved the plans for the senior trip, a traditional excursion undertaken by graduating seniors. This year’s plans include time spent in Long Beach, Wash., as presented by Carl Robanske, senior class president and spokesman for the trip.

Fifty Years Ago

May 11, 1972

Two teaching careers totaling 55 years will be concluded at the close of this school term when Mrs. Clarence (Lila) McNair and Mrs. Floyd (Helen) Brooksbank will step into retirement. Mrs. McNair taught remedial reading for six years and 11 years teaching third grade. Mrs. Brooksbank taught second grade for 18 years.

Miss Polly Cowen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Cowen and a junior at Dayton High School, has been selected to participate in the “American’s Youth in Concert” program of the Universal Academy of Music, Princeton, N.J.

The Ben Dickinson family will receive recognition as the 1972 Cattlemen of the Year Family. The tour of the cattle operation traditional noon barbecue is sponsored by the Columbia County Livestock Association and Cowbelles.

Five Bulldogs: Rick Webber, Ron Huwe, Elmer Talbott, Stan Knowles and Mike Reinland, members of the varsity basketball squad at Dayton High School, will be attending the Conifer Athletic Camp near Veradale as the result of a project initiated by Bonita Junior Women’s Club. Four sponsors for the boys are Bonita Juniors, Dayton Chiropractic Office, Blue Mountain Aerie 2618, FOE, and Dayton Kiwanis Club.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

May 8, 1947

The money is just rolling in. The Dayton check from the last paper drive amounted to $103, which is ready to be distributed. Troop 32 is in debt to a wonderful woman of our town who has just made her annual donation to the troop fund.

With 25 acres of ground, club house, barns; race track nearby; variety of recreation and sports facilities, The Country Club Has appealed to a large group. Floor plans for a 10,000 Dayton country club house, 40 feet by 80 feet with a lounge, veranda, kitchen and locker room is scheduled for construction this fall.

May 10, 1922

REFLECTS VOICE TWO MILES-Four electrical engineering students of the University of Washington, constructed a 750-pound concrete reflector which amplified and reflected sound from the Engineering building into space by means of aerial wires connecting the reflector with a Wonder–phone. Robert Lee, Enumclaw, Allen Ludstrom, Yakima, Charles Franklin, Seattle, and Harry Price, Miles City, Montana.

Bulgarian buttermilk delivered from the milk truck at 5¢ a quart. The Dayton Creamery and Ice Works.

Frank Gemmell, county sheriff, left Saturday for Sacramento, to bring Mr. Stewart to this county to answer to the charge of stealing mules from Charlie Jackson of Riveria.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

May 8, 1897

T. B. Gilmour has erected a steel windmill in the rear of his store, the mill will pump water into a public watering trough. This will be a great convenience to farmers and will quench the thirst of many a suffering horse.
