Wolfpack golfers miss the cutoff for state

CLE ELUM–Dayton-Waitsburg's Wolfpack golf team forged through difficult conditions at the EWAC 2B golf district match but unfortunately didn't play well enough to advance to the state tournament in Deer Park.

"We had some bright spots today under some difficult conditions," said Head Coach Mike McGhan. "Unfortunately the kids didn't make enough clutch shots to advance to the state tournament."

Team leader was senior golfer Theo Anderson, who carded a 114, with fellow senior Caleb Barron right behind at 115 and Jay Dimak hot on their trail with 117. Garrett Palmer finished the 18-hole, 72 par course with majestic mountain backdrops in 140 strokes.

DW's Claudia Benavides finished with a 150.

"I think a couple of them could have played better but they got a bit rattled with their playing partners' less-than-accurate counting of their strokes," McGhan said. "I am proud that this has never been an issue with DW golfers."

Other teams competing for state berths included Columbia Burbank, Cle Elum, Tri-Cities Prep, Mabton, Goldendale, White Swan, Warden and WWVA.

At Goldendale on May 4, narrow fairways, rough greens and a lack of familiarity with the course worked against DW golf, said Coach McGhan.

"We also were not able to practice this week due to our course being closed," McGhan said. "That being said, the entire team continued to show the class and sportsmanship that I have come to expect from them."

Lucas Van Hoose shot a personal best 131 on the par 72, 18-hole course where teams from Columbia, Goldendale, White Swan, Yakama Tribal and Mabton competed.

Barron led with 111 stroke, with Dimak shooting a 129, just ahead of Van Hoose. Palmer carded a 132 and Anderson shot a 135. Benavides finished in 139 strokes.
