Pool feasibility study funds among local grants made by Sherwood Trust

WALLA WALLA–A $10,000 grant from the Sherwood Trust will support a feasibility study to be conducted by Dayton’s Friends of the Dayton Community Pool was among 16 organizations in the area who received Sherwood Trust grants amounting to $876,000. The Columbia County Health System received $100,000 to support a licensed day care facility in Dayton, announced Brian Hunt, CEO of the Sherwood Trust.

The awards include Sherwood Trust’s annual competitive Core grants and Invitational grants awarded outside annual competitive grant programs.

“Our founders, Virginia and Donald Sherwood, set strong examples for local giving,” Hunt said. “We are proud to continue this work by investing in the impactful work nonprofits are doing here that support our vision that everyone in the Walla Walla Valley has a sense of belonging and can contribute to thriving communities.”

Core grants were awarded to the following:

•$60,000 to Blue Mountain Action Council to support its Pro Bono civil legal aid programs. https://www.bmacww.org/programs/pro-bono-lawyer-referral

•$100,000 to Columbia County Health Systems to support a facility for licensed daycare in Dayton. https://cchd-wa.org

•$20,000 to Friends of Children to support volunteer recruitment and technology improvements. https://wallawallafriends.org

•$25,000 to Lincoln High School in Walla Walla to support its internship program. https://www.wallawallalincolnhs.org

•$15,000 to United Way of Blue Mountains to support convening the Nonprofit Confluence group of area nonprofit leaders. https://www.uwbluemt.org

•$75,000 to Salvation Army over three years to support extended hours of its Food Bank. https://wallawalla.salvationarmy.org

Invitational grants were awarded to the following:

•$375,000 over three years to support Commitment to Community, a grassroots community engagement program at Blue Mountain Action Council that serves specific Walla Walla neighborhoods. https://www.bmacww.org/programs/neighborhood-organization

•$300,000 over three years to Community Council, a regional nonprofit that engages people through dialogue, inquiry and advocacy to build a vibrant region. https://www.wwcommunitycouncil.org

•$100,000 to Walla Walla Gun Club to support a publicly accessible shooting range facility. http://wallawallagunclub.com

•$60,000 to Tamástslikt Cultural Institute of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation to support upgrades to its permanent historical and cultural exhibits. https://www.tamastslikt.org

“These Core and Invitational awards support the tremendous contribution nonprofits make to the people and communities in our region,” said Sherwood Trust Board President Paul Schneidmiller.

Sherwood Trust’s Impact grant program will begin in September with up to $15,000 available for organizations that have not previously received Sherwood Trust funding and collaborative applications that include at least two organizations.

Sherwood Trust is a private, placed-based foundation that supports capacity-building to ensure that everyone in the Walla Walla Valley has a sense of belonging and contributes to a thriving region. Founded in 1991 to continue the legacy of Donald and Virginia Sherwood’s efforts to make the Walla Walla Valley a better place, it has invested more than $35 million to strengthen nonprofits and improve communities here.
