Wide receiver Spencer Hansen lays out for a Monte Pettichord pass that was just beyond his reach. Hansen made four receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown, and an interception, in DW's 20-16 loss to TriCities Prep.

WAITSURG–A fourth-quarter touchdown lifted the TriCities Prep Jaguars over Dayton-Waitsburg 20-16, giving the Wolfpack its first loss of the season.

DW (0-1, 4-1) visits Mabton next Saturday, October 8, for a 1 p.m. matchup.

After TCP's go-ahead touchdown, the Jaguars successfully executed an on-side kick, which put the Wolfpack defense back on the field, where they stopped TCP on a fourth-and-11 at the DW 19-yard line.

Monte Pettichord broke a 46-yard play, TCP's Owen Janke making the touchdown-saving tackle at the Jaguar 35. But there the drive stalled with a fourth-and-13, hook-and-ladder Pettichord to Spencer Hansen to Hudson Reser that was stopped short.

TriCities Prep went on to grind out the remaining five and one-half minutes, milking the play clock and getting crucial first downs until time expired.

"All 11 guys on defense, I'm just so proud of them," said Assistant Coach Dirk Hansen, who filled in for Head Coach Troy Larsen, who was out due to surgery. "It's that old cliché, to bend and don't break and tonight was a prime example of that."

The Wolfpack took the opening kickoff to the end zone, covering 63 yards in eight plays, Pettichord finding Preston Hansen at the end of a 28-yard pass. With the Reser point after run, DW led 8-0.

But TCP came right back, exploiting a defensive breakdown for a 50-yard scoring pass from Bryson Wilde to Caleb Sherfey. With the Ulices Estrada run, it was 8-8.

An interception and fumble recovery by DW stopped TCP's next possessions, the Wolfpack moving to the 21 where the fourth-down pass to Daylan Marlow was caught outside the end zone.

The pigskin is about to bounce off the helmet of DW receiver Daylan Marlow (11) in the end zone, defended by Karter Gadish (1), which then went straight up as a "jump ball" for Wolfpack wide out Spencer Hansen, who won the tug-of-war with his TCP defender for a Wolfpack touchdown.

TCP was intercepted by Kaylub Prather, giving DW the ball on the TCP 26. A second-down pass to Marlow was tipped straight up by both players and Spenser Hansen and the TCP defender came down with the ball, Hansen wresting it away for a touchdown giving DW a 16-8 lead. TCP scored with :50 for a 16-14 halftime score.

The only second-half score was TCP's touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and the Jaguars then successfully defended their lead by executing an on-side kick. DW's defense stiffened and held at their 19 then the offense, thanks to a 46-yard Pettichord scamper, got to the TCP 35, where the Pettichord-S. Hansen-Reser hook-and-ladder fell short. TCP then wasted the final five-plus minutes for the win.
