Ten Years Ago

December 12, 2012

Columbia Cut Stock, which has been producing wooden windows primarily for Anderson Windows and Pella for 30 years, will cease production December 5. "It was a business decision," cited Dennis Lockard, owner and manager of CCS, "It becoming more difficult to make a profit."

Kiwanis honored several members for their service, with the Legion of Honor Award. To be eligible for the Award, a Kiwanian must have at least 25 years of Kiwanis-club membership. Those honored are Jon McFarland-25 years, Lowell Richter-25 years, Terry Nealey-36 years, and Howard Whipple-52 years. Members Clarence Spenard, Drew Woods and Ted Patterson, were recognized for contributions to fund-raising efforts. Marian Whipple, an honorary member, received the Dayton Kiwanis Club Special Service Award for 2011-2012. Joe Huether was presented the Distinguished Service Award.


Twenty-Five Years Ago

December 10, 1997

Four juvenile vandals were issued citation in connection with damage caused to city property at the city park. Ryan Hudson was contacted by Zella Powers about the incident. A hole was punched in the swimming pool's solar cover, graffiti on the Golden Ambassador's benches and the back wall of the gazebo and on the footbridge from the park to the football field.

Fifty Years Ago

December 14, 1972

The "Phantom snow plow of Dayton" struck again early Tuesday morning to clear walkways throughout the business district. Those up early enough could have identified the "phantom" as Darrel "Butch" McCauley, owner-operator of Dayton Cut and Wrap.


The Columbia County 4-H meat animals judging team placed 19th out of 58 at the Pacific International Livestock Exposition held in Portland, Ore. The team members are Cindy Startin, Dianne Eaton, Jeff Turner and Perry Patrick. Patrick was the fourth high individual with a score of 372 out of a possible 400.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

December 11, 1947

The Future Farmers of America team of Harvey Shale, Ronnie Kenney, Robert Moser, Bill Brown and Frank Rodrick won first in the state grading contest at Ellensburg. This is the first time the team has won first place. In the southeastern Washington preliminaries, they won first in grading and judging of potatoes.

Pfc. Richard White, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd White, is serving with the famed fighting First Cavalry Division on occupation duty in ten prefectures of the Tokyo-Yokohoma area.

School Boxing Rules Laid Out: one of the main concerns is the officiating, according to Henry Wiegand, boxing coach of DHS. Officials must be certified and selected by the district boxing commission, paid regular fees, not allowed to officiate in the community in which they reside, a minimum of three officials for each event.

One Hundred Years Ago

December 13, 1922

WILL STOP NAUGHTY DANCES: New York Woman Police Commissioner to War on Dance Halls marked by a terpsichorean reform wave. Proprietors of 400 public dance halls in the greater city were warned by Deputy Police Commissioner Mrs. George W. Loft, that they would be jailed if they did not put a stop to "indecent, demoralizing dancing," "cheek-to-cheek" dancing and movements known as the scandal walk, the cradle walk, the Chicago camel, the syncopating shimmy and the chicken shaker are terrible. They must cease.

President Harding has indicated his lack of sympathy with those who desire that he "disband" the Ku Klux Klan by presidential proclamation. His viewpoint is that the activities of the Klan is not a matter for Federal supervision; that is wholly a state matter.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

December 11, 1897

Havana, Dec. 6–The deplorable condition of the country grows more apparent. Refugees and reconcentrados are growing more miserable. According to reports from San Domingo, smallpox is making terrible ravages, with more than 4,000 dead in the city alone, to say nothing of the suburban towns which are affected.

A terrible typhoon swept over the Philippine Islands October 6, devastating the province of Leyte, Manila, and causing the death of several hundred persons. About 250 Europeans are reported to have perished and the number of native victims is at 400 to 500 persons.
