Dayton's Sarah Shutters named a Rising Star

WALLA WALLA–The Blue Mountain Community Foundation has selected Dayton's Sarah Shutters for its Rising Star Youth Award. She is the daughter of Rev. Linda Weistaner and the late Marvin Shutters.

Shutters will be honored at the Blue Mountain Community Foundation Philanthropy Awards Friday, March 3, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Marcus Whitman Hotel and Event Center in Walla Walla.

She was informed of the honor at the end of one of the performances of "The Sound of Music," the Touchet Valley Arts Council's 2022 fall musical stage production, which she directed, and, on the day BMCF CEO and President Kol Medina made the announcement, was in costume, having filled in for a sick cast member.

The Rising Star Youth Award is open to residents of the Blue Mountain Region who are 21 or younger and who have shown extraordinary initiative and drive to serve their community through volunteer charitable work, according to the Foundation. In efforts to help their community, nominees should show one or more of the following qualities: a selfless nature; ability to raise donated funds for nonprofits; strong initiative or leadership; ability to be part of a team; creativity in problem solving; or successful results in their charitable work and play.

Other awards to be presented at the event include: Spirit of Giving-Larry Zawatzky; Business Making a Difference – Wall 2 Wall Furniture and Mattress; and Exceptional Nonprofit Service – Jan Foster.
