Ten Years Ago

During March through August, 2012, seven wolf sightings in Columbia County were officially recorded by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. Footprints were reported in the Skyline area near the Mill Creek Watershed and animal sightings were recorded near the Godman Camp; near Sawtooth trail; on Chase Mountain, Harting Grade and a pair below the Peak of Godman Mountain.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

February 11, 1998

Rebecca Taylor took the helm of Blue Mountain Home Health (BMHH), operated by the Columbia County Hospital District, which provides in-home care. Taylor takes over the position formerly held by long-time hospital employee Joanna Tate.

KeyCorp is selling its Dayton branch to Sterling Financial Corp. headquartered in Spokane. The sale is part of a $72 million deal involving 33 KeyBank branches in Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

Sidney Stecker, Transportation Planning consultant with the Palouse Economic Development Council, met with the Palouse Regional Transportation Planning Organization Policy Board and Technical Advisory Committee for Columbia County to discuss the Blue Mountain Railroad Critical Needs Assessment Study he is preparing for the Port of Columbia. The study will focus on the conditions of the rail spur and the critical needs for rehabilitation of the line.

Fifty Years Ago

February 15, 1973

The Green Giant Foundation will be offering one of its $500 General Career Scholarships to a graduating senior of Dayton High School it was announced by C.J. Halling, representative for Green Giant Company. Last year, Michael A. Agenbroad was the winner of this award.

Members of Dayton chapter, Future Farmers of America, earned $18,042.99 in their supervised farming programs in 1972. This program is an integral part of vocational agriculture for students as the “learn by doing.” Each student enrolled is required to have some form of supplementary farm program in addition to his day school work. One semester of credit per year is allowed toward the student’s graduation requirement.

Polly Cowan, senior at Dayton High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Cowan, has been selected to participate in the All-Northwest Choir, Orchestra and Band. The select group of student musicians from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana will perform during the Northwest Division of Music Educators national convention to be held in Portland, Oregon.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

February 12, 1948

Sheriff E. E. Warwick reports “beef” thieves are active. Two stockmen of Columbia County have lost cows in the past several months, one stockman in Walla Walla County lost a beef, and losses have been reported in Whitman and Garfield Counties.

Max Boone of Spokane, son of Mrs. Skates Powell and the late Rev. W. G. Skates, and a former Dayton boy, with territory in and around Okanogan County in Washington, has broken all records for salesmanship of the Fuller Brush company, with 12,000 salesmen competing.

Roberta Boone, 13-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max Boone, and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Boone, won the Spokane District championship in figure skating for all women skaters who have not previously won a capital prize. Miss Boone was the youngest in the group.

One Hundred Years Ago

February 14, 1923

Turks have presented a new ultimatum to the allies, giving them three days for the departure of allied warships from Smyrna and the Turks claim all liberty of action at the end of that period. Turkish newspapers assert that negotiations between the authorities and the representatives of the allies are progressing and that an amicable settlement of the situation of expected.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

February 12, 1898

Jer Bailey and sons intend to start up a shingle mill on Little Tukanon as early in the spring as soon as it is possible to get machinery over the road. In order to get the shingles out, a road will be made over the mountain above the Patrick grade.
