Ten Years Ago

February 27, 2012

The House Community Development, Housing and Tribal Affairs Committee voted to approve a measure that would create a new Walla Walla Veterans' Home as a branch of the Washington Soldiers' Home. Rep. Terry Nealey introduced House Bill 1782, which gained unanimous committee approval in Olympia.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

February 25, 1998

Gallaher Brings Home Medal. Wrestling at 168 pounds in the State Tournament in Tacoma, Tanner Gallaher had to settle for a sixth-place finish due to an injury.

The Columbia County Hospital District and Dayton School District #2 each received $47,400 in Day Estate money. One of Dayton's most prominent early doctors, William W. (Will) Day and his wife Jessie, upon their deaths, placed a large amount of farm land and other assets in a trust to benefit the hospital and the schools.

Elizabeth Schilling, Miranda James, and Megan Jagelski will represent the Columbia County Fair "Country Classic" as hostesses for 1998.

Fifty Years Ago

February 1, 1973

Pat H. O'Neil, owner of Mutual Printing Co., publisher of the Dayton Chronicle, has after seventy-one years of involvement in the printing and publishing business in the Touchet Valley has sold his interests effective March 1 to Harry E. and Vilene Ringhand, former publishers and co-owners of the Valley Herald at Milton-Freewater, Ore.

Miss Vonda Teal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Teal, has accepted a position with Lyon Associates, Inc., an American architectural consulting and engineering firm and will be assigned to Okinawa for six months after the six-month training period. She will be serving as a secretary and administrative assistant.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

February 26, 1948

The grade school "Bullpups" are Champions! Coached by Floyd Bafus, the grade school basketball aggregation won the 1948 Basketball Championship in Walla Walla, defeating Sharpstein School. The Walla Walla Junior Chamber of Commerce trophy is in Dayton hands for the first time, Sharpstein has held it on two occasions.

The plane of the Blue Mountains Dusting Company, Inc., piloted by L.L. Sawyer, made a forced landing on a hillside just south of the cemetery when it ran out of gas. The plane had seeded a last run and was headed back to the Touchet Valley airport near Huntsville when the motor died for the want of fuel.

One Hundred Years Ago

February 28, 1923

The Mount Pleasant School, which has been taught by Miss Leah Rainwater this year, has been closed as its six month's term is at an end, and the Jim Creek School, taught by Miss Vayle Nogel, will close this week for the same reason.

E.E. Cotant and Don Pruitt of Stanfield, Ore., is to send one carload of bees to the Milton-Freewater country to aid in the pollenization of fruit trees during the time they are blossoming. "The bees are rented" to the fruit men during the blossom time so that the pollen may be better distributed. This practice has been used in other sections with the greatest success and the cherry growers of Walla Walla will try the plan this year.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

February 26, 1898

Beginning Sunday, Feb. 13, the O.R. & N. train will leave Dayton at 10:15 p.m., connecting at Bolles Junction with trains for Portland and the east via the Union Pacific and Spokane points east via the Great Northern. The lay over at Walla Walla and Bolles are now avoided and passengers can come in and get out of Dayton without being delayed reroute.

Los Angeles: It is stated that the overproduction of oil in the Los Angeles oil fields at the present time is nearly 500 barrels a day.

Secret Mission of an officer of the Spanish army. It is said he is on his way to the City of Mexico on a secret mission, which is supposed to be to enlist the services of the Mexican government, in the event of trouble between the United States and Spain.
