Door security and communication system updates discussed by Board

March 9, 2023

DAYTON–The Dayton School Board met for a work session on March 1 and discussed campus updates to the public-address system and implementing a new security system for the doors. They also were introduced to a science curriculum that middle school teacher Clint Reser is requesting to try out. A portion of a presentation from the MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) Summit for student behavioral and academic success was shown and discussed.

The Board heard and contributed to discussion about updating the door security with plans to do some limited changes over spring break and the remainder in the summer. This would include changing the system of how the doors lock with timers of when they open that would be accessed through scanned key cards. Superintendent Rich Stewart said that a committee for safety is "looking at the gaps we have in our process now." Other upgrades needed are for the windows, as well as the PA system. Lastly, a brief update was given about beginning the budget process for next school year of 2023-2024.

Review of program OpenSciEd proposed by teacher Clint Reser to try first with the sixth grade to approach the subject from an open science approach of discovery with evidence-based guidance. Reser said that the model encourages communication with peers in the class about their findings.

It is a free program that provides materials with lessons that promote students' participation. A presentation about the program was provided to the Board and staff present. Stewart pointed out that it is just a trial right now for the sixth grade. "In order to do a correct adoption, we would need to have it presented to the public and the Board to approve it."

A video clip was presented from the MTSS Summit for favorable behavioral and academic outcomes for students. The video compared the model to that of public health in approaching disease with interventions with the expectation that 80% would respond well, though some may need other additional interventions to get to a place of wellness. This is a combination of two other intervention systems–Response to Intervention and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports.

Business Manager Jana Eaton has begun the process of laying out the framework for the 2023-24 school year budget. She is working with ESD 123 to evaluate anticipated State funding. Stewart said resolutions will be presented to the Board at upcoming meetings along with recommendations for budgetary items including the reduction of the workforce.
