Life-long model and flight enthusiast completes scale model of Spirit of St. Louis. Jim Edwards crafted a full scale model replica of the Spirit of St. Louis, the plane to make the first non-stop flight over the ocean from New York to Paris in 1927, flown solo by Charles Lindbergh. The one-quarter scale model Edwards completed will be housed in a Plexiglas display case, under the full-scale replica of the plane at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville, Ore.

Jane (Schirman) Korver, York College's Director of Residential Planning and Campus Wellness, was selected for the 1997 Governor's Highway Safety Award-Volunteer of the Year. Korver is a Dayton High School graduate and is the daughter of Roland and Carol Schirman. Her award was a direct result of this Expo which is targeted each year toward "at risk" high school students who have never been on a college campus before, with this being a new experience for them.

At the State Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competition in Bellevue, eleven Dayton High School students qualified to go on to national competition.

Misses Megan Jagelski, Miranda James and Elizabeth Schilling, will serve as Fair Hostesses for the 108th Columbia County Fair.

Longtime Dayton resident, Brian Black, retired from Pacific Power and Light after 26 years of service.

Fifty Years Ago

May 3, 1973

For the fourth consecutive week, Dayton High School FFA chapter livestock judging team, Perry Patrick, Jack Himmelberger, Dan Magill, Randy James and Mary Sue Evers, stayed in the banner division with a second-place win, at the Dayton Junior Livestock Pre-show in competition with 14 teams.

Two Dayton queen candidates, Judy Patterson, Valarie Norris and Becky Hatfield, with 12 other riders will make the second annual promotional horseback ride to the Milton-Freewater Pea Festival to take part in the Pea Festival Parade.

Mary Sue Evers placed second and Mary Kerckhof placed fourth, both junior members, in the Future Farmers of America speech contest held in Walla Walla. Miss Evers' speech won her the right to represent the southeast Washington district as one of the two finalists in the regional contest.

Clarence Stearns, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Stearns, and 13-year-old freshman at Dayton High School, has a nanny goat who presented him with kid quadruplets. This was her third litter, she produced triplets in her second time around.

Mrs. Wayne (Frances) Spoonemore, secretary for Dayton School District No. 2, has received the first state award as Educational Secretary of 1972-73 from the Washington Association of Educational Secretaries Mrs. Spoonemore, is one of the top 25 candidates now eligible for the "Secretary of the Year" award from the National Association of Educational Secretaries.

April 29, 1948

Pouring the concrete for the new Columbia County Grain Growers' elevator at Turner was to start Monday morning. The new elevator will be composed of six huge tanks, the intervening space surrounding the tanks will be utilized into 12 bins, and the capacity of the new elevator will be 250,000 bushels of wheat.

There's a big fight for the eradication of Tuberculosis from the Inland Empire by 1960. Twelve tuberculosis leagues composed of the counties in eastern Washington, decided the first step would be the purchase of a mobile chest X-ray unit which will tour the counties until the battle is won.

Six members, Bertram Dingle, Billy Gillis, Bill Bales, Wayne Casseday, Derril Rodrick and Dick Moore and their respective model planes, challenged the Walla Walla members. Walla Walla won the race, but Moore and Casseday won events in the sport racing.

Don Russell will be opening his new paint and wallpaper store about May 1.

A formal declaration that war exists between the United States and Spain passed both branches of congress, the declaration was made in accordance with the recommendation of President McKinley.

A young child of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Corbett, of Huntsville, fell into a pan of scalding water, after lingering for two days in agony, passed away.
