Quilts of Valor

Two local veterans–twin brothers, as a matter of fact–were honored recently with a Quilt of Valor, presented by local quilt artists Debbie Baxter, left, and Sylvia Demaris, third from left. Receiving the quilts were Lupe Benavides, second from left, and Sal Benavides. The brothers, Silvestre Anda-verde Benavides, and Guadalupe Andaverde Benavides, were in different branches of the military in the early 1970s. Sal joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in Korea from 1970-1974. Lupe en-listed in the U.S. Army in 1971, serving in Korea as well, until being discharged in 1973.
