Pomeroy Schools' first day is Aug. 28

POMEROY–The first day of school for students will be Monday, August 28, 2023, beginning at 8:15 a.m. for JR/SR high and elementary. School will be dismissed at 3:05 p.m.

NEW STUDENT PRE-REGISTRATION

Elementary students new to the Pomeroy School District may pre-register at the Elementary School office, located at 121 10th St., starting August 14. Registration time is 8:30 a.m. until noon, and 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Immunization records, birth certificate, child's social security number, and any other pertinent records must be brought to registration.

New Junior-Senior high school students will pre-register with Mr. Fred Knebel in the Guidance/Counseling Office at the Jr/Sr High School August 23, 24, 25. Students wishing to change their schedules will need to meet with Mr. Knebel. Registration time is from 9 a.m. until noon, and 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Students and/or parents wishing to contact the Counseling Office may make appointments with Mr. Knebel beginning August 23 by calling 509-843-1331 or 509-566-7031. He will be available to discuss scheduling, credits, college selections, etc.

ELEMENTARY SUPPLY LIST

All registered elementary students should have received a welcome-back letter from their teacher the week of July 14. Supply lists are at psd.wednet.edu. Please contact Alaina Colbert at 509-843-1651 starting Aug. 14 with any further questions.

GRADE 8-12 RETURNING STUDENT REGISTRATION

All registered returning Jr/Sr High School students, watch for announcement of dates when schedules will be available at the main office.

7TH GRADE ORIENTATION

Seventh grade orientation will be held the first day of school. An administrator will share a power point on Facebook and to the PSD website for parents and students, prior to Aug. 30. An administrator and Mr. Knebel will be available during registration to answer questions.

TK-6th/12th: 8:15 a.m.–3:05 p.m.

GOOD NUTRITION ESSENTIAL to LEARNING

Pomeroy School District believes a healthy, nutritious meal program significantly enhances a student's academic performance. A well-balanced, nutritious breakfast is essential to good learning in addition to his or her lunch. Breakfast is available for grades K-12 at the high school building 7:45-8:20 a.m. each school day. Lunch will be served to grades K-12 in the high school building.

ALL MEALS WILL BE FREE FOR THE 2023-24 SCHOOL YEAR!

ASB FEES

Associated Student Body Card, Grades K-6, $37; Sixth Grade Athletic ASB Card , $55; Grades 7-12, $55. Adult Athletic Season Pass, $65. Senior Citizen (62 and older) Athletic Season Pass $37.

Lori Flynn, District/ASB secretary, will be available in the District Office or High School office at the starting Aug. 14 to accept ASB fees.

The school encourages everyone to come in early to avoid the first-day rush.

Tereasa Summers, Garfield Co. Treasurer has informed the school district that the NSF check fee is $39.

BUS LOADING and UNLOADING

School buses will load and unload on Pataha Street at the east end of the Jr/Sr High School building.

BUS ROUTES

School Bus routes for the 2023-2024 school year will have some minor changes. Please have your children at the bus stop a few minutes early the first couple of days. If you are new to the school district, please call Jay Franks, transportation supervisor, at 509-843-3393, 509-843-8226, or (cell) 509-556-7027 for scheduling new stop information.

STUDENT INSURANCE

Student insurance may be purchased through Myers-Stevens & Toohey & Co., Inc. Forms are available at the offices of the Elementary and Jr-Sr high schools or you may register online at http://www.myers-stevens.com. Various coverages are offered including: 24-hour coverage, school-time only, a football plan (required to participate in football at Pomeroy High School if your own insurance does not cover football), and dental coverage. ID cards are issued to enrolled students.

STUDENT INSURANCE

***Parents of athletes please read!***

The school office will not oversee mailing enrollment forms. This process requires PARENTS or guardians to mail or fax their enrollment form using credit cards, checks or money orders for payment. Then when that is received by the company and accepted, the company will mail the parent two (2) computer generated ID cards to confirm coverage.

The verification of coverage, once you have mailed the completed enrollment form and payment, could take up to three weeks. If you need Student Insurance Coverage for your student athlete, please pick up an insurance form from the Pomeroy School District Office. Remember, every student-athlete must be covered by some type of insurance before they can participate in a sport. High School football players (Gr.9-12) must be covered by insurance that also covers Tackle Football.

IMMUNIZATION RECORDS REQUIRED

State law requires all students enrolled in public school to be up to date on the required immunizations for their age along with a medical copy of the immunizations before or on the first day of school. Washington State is not allowing any exceptions for this. Along with these vaccinations, students age 11 need documentation of an additional Tdap vaccine before starting 7th grade. Children entering TK/kinder are required to have their Dtap No.5, polio No. 4, MMR No.2 and varicella No. 2 before school starts. Failure to provide documentation of the required immunization, will prevent your child from attending school. Please make sure they are up to date. A parent/guardian signature may also be required on the immunization record for the school file. FALL SPORTS ORIENTATION NIGHT

Fall Sports Orientation Night will be held Monday, Aug 14, at 7 p.m. in the Elevated Seating Area at PHS. All fall sports athletes and at least one parent Should attend the meeting. School personnel will be available to collect fees and help answer any questions at 6 p.m. Athletes and parents should complete forms contained in Skyward PRIOR to orientation in case there are any issues or questions. If you need help accessing Skyward, please contact the HS office at (509)843-1331.

All online forms must be completed prior to an Athlete being cleared to practice.

HS 9-12 football practice will begin Wed., Aug 16, time at 7 p.m.

HS 8-12 cross country and 9-12 volleyball practices will begin Mon., Aug 21, time will be announced at sports orientation night.

JH Football's first practice will begin Mon., Aug 21 at 4 p.m.

JH Girls (6-8) girls' basketball will start Mon., Aug 28 after school.

More details will be provided at the meeting at sports orientation night.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT

AUGUST 24

To kick off the new school year Back to School night for grades TK-12 will be held Aug. 24 from 6-7 p.m. Grades 7-12 will meet at the Jr/Sr High School and TK-6 grades will meet at the elementary school in his or her classrooms. Elementary Students please bring your school supplies this night. Parents as well as students are invited to come and learn about the upcoming year.

PICTURE INFORMATION

Individual Pictures: Sixth-12th grade students will have their individual pictures and ASB Card pictures taken Thursday, Sept. 1 in the HS library. All 6-12 grade students will be photographed for record purposes, even if no pictures are purchased. Picture envelopes will be sent home with students the first day of school. TK–5th grade students will have their individual pictures taken Wed., Oct. 12, along with 6-12 grade retakes and fall sports pictures. Elementary retakes will be taken on Thurs, Nov. 17. Leo's Photography will be the photographer.

COLLEGE INFORMATION

Pomeroy High School will be offering English 101 and 201 through EWU. Chemistry 121 through Walla Walla Community College. Tuition information will be explained to students during the first week of class. To qualify, students need to meet minimum PHS/Articulated College requirements prior to enrolling (senior standing, previous course prerequisites, State test scores, etc.). Students with questions can contact an administrator or Mr. Knebel at the high school 843-1331 beginning Aug. 23.

TITLE IX, SECTION 504 AND HOMELESS COMPLIANCE, DRUG and ALCOHOL

Pomeroy School District #110 complies with Title IX and Section 504 of the Education Amendments of 1973. Title IX requires school districts to provide opportunities for all students and personnel in all areas, regardless of gender. The district has expanded academic and extra-curricular programs for girls in recent years.

Rachel Gwinn serves as Title IX Compliance Officer for the district. Any student or employee who believes he or she has been discriminated against based on gender may appeal through the compliance officer to have the problem corrected.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 requires school districts to ensure that students who are disabled are identified, evaluated, and provided with appropriate educational services. This district shall provide a free, appropriate education to each qualified handicapped person who is in the district's jurisdiction, regardless of the nature or severity of the handicap.

Any employee who believes he or she has been discriminated against based on handicapping condition may appeal through the compliance officer and/or district office to have the problem corrected.

To the extent practical and as required by law, the district will work with homeless students and their families to provide stability in school attendance and other services. Special attention will be given to ensuring the enrollment and attendance of homeless students not currently attending school. Homeless students will be provided district services for which they are eligible, including Head Start and comparable pre-school programs, Title I, similar state programs, special education, bilingual education, vocational and technical education programs, gifted and talented pro- grams and school nutrition programs. Homeless students are defined as lacking a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence, including: Sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing or economic hardship; Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative ad- equate accommodations; Living in emergency or transitional shelters; Are abandoned in hospitals; Awaiting foster care placement; Living in public or private places not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodations for human beings; Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, transportation stations or similar settings; Migratory children living in conditions described in the previous examples. Fred Knebel is the district's liaison for homeless students and their families.
