New bleachers have been installed in the Dayton High School Gymnasium. Taxpayers approved a maintenance and operation levy during the fall of 2011 specifically for the replacement project.

September 2, 1998

Christy Bell, program technician for the Columbia County Farm Service Agency, was presented a Certificate of Appreciation by County Committee Chairman John Laib. The certificate was given in recognition of her service and dedication to the farmers of Columbia County through her work in the Price Support Program, assisted in placing 1,168,475 bushels of 1997 wheat under loan. Providing $3,329,555 in capital to their farming operations.

In a victory for farmers, the Washington Wheat Commission successfully challenged a USDA policy that threatened to interfere with the marketing of club wheat, a specialty wheat highly favored by select Asian markets.

September 6, 1973

The Columbia County Livestock Association is offering a reward of up to $500 for information leading to the arrest and or conviction of anyone involved in the rustling of livestock.

The infestation of the tree-killing tussock moths that has spread uncontrolled under the DDT ban, has spread to a total of 900,000 acres, in eastern Washington and Oregon and could spread further this year, a USFS spokesman said recently. The outbreak is estimate to be a third larger than the state of Rhode Island. In addition a new outbreak has defoliated trees on 90,000 acres in northern Idaho.

Walt H. Grubb was recognized by the National Public Service Life Insurance Company as one of the top 10 insurance producers in the NPS Million Dollar Club at the company's convention.

Purple ribbon winners at the 1973 Columbia County Fair Dress Revue are Krisy Boggs, Jeanie Boggs, Cindy Startin, who is also a National Contestant, will be traveling to the State Fair; Stephanie Rogg, Karen Brewington and Becky Gibson have beginner projects.

September 2, 1948

Rex Buchanan arrived in Dayton to take over management of the C.C. Anderson Food Mart replacing Mill Morrison, who has been transferred to Baker, Oregon, where he will manage the company's food mart there.

Plans for launching the "Wheat for Relief" drive in Columbia county. "Wheat for Relief" is part of the nationwide plan sponsored by the Council of Churches, Catholic Rural Life and Lutheran World Relief through which gifts in are accepted from American farmers and distributed to the needy overseas. The great value of the relief dollar spent by a church group for overseas aid as compared with the government dollar spent for the same purpose.

Bidding for the lease of the state 640 acres of grazing land, on the Burnt Fork of the South Touchet and partly on the lower slopes of Griffin peak, was quite spirited by two bidders. A final bid of $92 awarded the lease to Dean Wallace.

September 2, 1898

Americanizing Santiago----The American postal system is now to be introduced here and house to house deliveries and letter boxes are to be established. The merchants are much pleased and the desire is general for the establishment of American business systems. School will be opened September 1 and English will be taught in all grades for the purposes of its Americanizing effects.

A large rattlesnake worked its way under the bed of Almon Baker, a Klickitat farmer. Mr. Baker did not discover the snake until he was dressing the next morning, losing no time in dispatching it.

A Record Breaker---Lyman & Vaughn's heading and threshing outfit suspended operations, after a run of 29½ days during which they threshed 26,000 bushels of grain all No.1 wheat, weighing 140 pounds and better to the sack.
